Hey, a friend of my took this video from behind the boat. I was trying to make a left to the amity cut there and there was a big boat coming up fast on my port side so i just slowed up and he did not seam very happy to come off plane. The wife signal to him regarding my turn, He was still not happy. Do not think I was wrong?

Note: The video makes you look like where going real fast, not really 23mph avg. speed.

like the video the speed is decieving

Now you sound like my wife. I typicaly tell the wife to wave a towel. The week-ends on long islands Great South Bay is like the old " Wacky Races" show :)

I agree John! It get's pretty nutty out there. I always exaggerate my turns to try and let the other boat react but that doesn't always work. Plus, in the video it looks like the guy ended up going the other way after he stopped. What"s up with that? Todd

It looks like the other boat did go the other direction , he should have crossed behind you anyway.

Yes, I did see that. Maybe he is like those car drivers who swing to the left when they are making a right. That also drives me crazy. JG

Ahhhhhh south shore boating....typical weekend zoo scenario.
The only thing in the big guy's defense is that when you make those turns into the Amity and other cuts, you need to stay up on plane as the water is VERY shallow just outside the channel markers. If he was continuing heading west he should have just crossed behind you.

If you watch the video closly he actually makes a u turn and starts headed back :smt021:huh: 4:05 into the video

Very strange in those waters with everyone climbing up on you so fast. Is it very shallow on either side? I hate when boats come up right on me like that...how would they know if I was going to slow down or stop? With my camper canvas I am always having to bend down and look back to see if anyone is there.

The State Boat Channel is outlined with marshland, and is very narrow. Not my favorite place to boat during the weekend and holidays. Here is an image of where that video was taken.

Got it. My mistake, I took it that you were on the opposite end, heading home from Zachs and and this all went down in the state channel

It is difficult to say... Even though you had the right of way, you have to always be aware of the guy who is not looking, or drunk, or both, or does not know the rules of the road... If I where in the same situation I would have probably sped up to make the turn... Your smaller boat can move faster than the larger boats, so you could have used some throttle to put some more distance between the boats... On the week ends it is a zoo, and I try to zig when everone is zagging... Sometimes it is safer to come back in the dark...

I understand what "rcknecht" is saying about speeding up to make the left. We have all have done in our cars. You see that "18 wheeler" coming at you and you do what you have to get out of the way. But typically you gauge the other guys speed first before you make the maneuver and you know the what your car can do.You also don't have to worry about over doing the turn and have your passenger falling and hurting themselves.
Being a newer boater I have not have much experience with emergency maneuvers.
I know now how that Deer feels in the Head lights....:wow:

Not talking about an emergency maneuver, just maintaining plane to keep a shallower draft. I've been in that cut and have seen birds standing in ankle deep water 2 feet from the channel marker. Looks like he stopped outside the cut to let you get some distance on him before he proceeded.
