Sad day on the Chick... Winds yesterday evening out of the NW at 16 gusting to 25. Small craft warnings were up. I am very sorry for this family.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) Duck hunters found the body of a 52-year-old Newport News man about a mile from his kayak on the Chicahominy River Saturday afternoon.

The man’s kayak was found anchored about 500 yards and about 50 feet from shore before a group of hunters found his body around 2:30 p.m. Nov. 1, said Lee Walker with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Initial reports indicate the man went fishing last night and his kayak rolled over. He was not found wearing a life-jacket, according to Walker.

Officials are not releasing the man’s identification until his family can be properly notified.

The accident remains under investigation by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

That's terrible. As a rule I always wear a PFD when the water gets below 60° and or I'm paddling a kayak or in a small craft with low freeboard.

I should wear one all the time but I'm guilty of being complacent.

Even with self-inflating life vests available these Darwin Winners still find a way to win.
