If you really want to maximize the wealth of knowledge we have here, make your thread title informative.

This also helps with the future search-ability of past threads.

If you have an rough running running 350 mag, title the thread: "1999 350 mag 5.7 MPI running rough at idle"...... NOT ...... "Help"

Also fill out your boat details completely so we don't have to guess what we are talking about.

Okay rant over, back to normal programming.

that wasn't a rant...just a polite suggestion
but a very good suggestion.

Quint, yes this issue drives me crazy too. What I try to try to do is avoid these posts in protest. As a matter of fact, when I start a thread I always try to give as much info in the title, so as not to waste others time reading my post, when they have no interest in the topic.

Any yes, few will read this thread. Maybe you should have made the title: "suggestion"

But....sometimes those people with no interest could have the information or experience needed to solve the issue

But I tend to read nearly everything to quench my thirst for knowlege

My pet peeve has been the "official ______ thread" with hundreds of pages and thousands of posts. Those threads have good info in them, but are useless because of the sheer size of them.

I think those threads are among the most valuable here as potential purchasers can get a large volume of information about the vessel as well as contacts that own one easily. They additionally offer one local place for all the little stuff that might not deserve its own thread. What may be at the heart of your frustration is the poor search function and its inability to find the specific post where the revelant information is.

I think that you are correct. I would love to glean as much information from those posts, but its nearly impossible to intelligently search them. As the new guy here I just like search through the titles and read what applies to me, when there are 1000 pages I'm overwhelmed and can't sort out what's for me... Oh and I might be a bit jaded because I can't find a thread that fits my specific boat... Haha... But seriously, the info is very good, just in a large pile like the work on my desk...

Nah, should have titled it 'help, frustrated'

Seriously though, +1 for all the other comments, well said, and again unfortunately won't be read by those it needs to be read by.

Once you are within an "Official ..." thread, does CSR offer us the ability to do a search within that same thread? I don't think so, so the question is ... can the CSR programming be tweaked to allow us to do so?

While the "Official" threads do have a wealth of information, a lot of it is overlooked.

Say you have a 300 DA with an electrical issue. The answer is in the 320 DA thread but the 300 owner doesn't look there because he has a different model. My thought is that there are too many places the same question can be asked. A motor issue can show up in General, an "Official" thread or the mechanical area.

I agree with the comments about the search feature, BUT!!!!!!!!

The money you save from the FREE information, is worth the effort of having to scan and read through a thread. Yea, it would be nice to have it organized but heck, there are so many inputs from genuine people that want to help....and you guys want them to do more. Hmmmm, a hearty thank you and a small gesture to the Admin is little toll for the effort that is put in place to help you, for free!

So "thank you" to ALL the contributers. No matter how small or trivial, every little bit helps.

I wanted to add, you can search on specific words, that will get you close to an answer, if it's there. That's what I do if I can't seem to find what I'm needing.

For me, it is about the time it takes to see what is active and then try to answer someone's question.

I never....NEVER....take the time to open a thread whose title doesn't lead me to believe I can help the OP. I just don't have time to read every post.

THe "official........." threads are similar. If I don't own and am not particularly familiar with the official .....boat, I won't open the thread because I figure that the people who own one of the official......'s will already have answered the OP's question. And, then, I find those types of threads to be more of a good ol boys discussion since they generally run way off topic after about post #3 on a new subject.

I think if we just posted questions as Quint suggests, it is more searchable and gets answers quicker from more people.

I think one of the BIGGEST problems with the OFFICIAL threads is the lack of "quoting" the question that is being responded too. There are tons of random replies that may be answering a question a page or two before it and seems totally non-relevant to what is the current topic. I think if people used the "quote" function more in those threads they would be alot easier to read through. Just my two cents!!

I agree 100%. The other problem with the "official" threads are people sway off topic of that particular model and start going back and forth about a particular component or go off topic all together showing off and discussing a different model boat they just traded in for or maybe what they did last weekend. That kind of stuff provides a lot of "filler" that neither pretains to the "Official" boat model being discussed or sometimes anything about boating at all which can be a little discouraging when trying to go through one of those threads. They do have great information but it can be hard to locate.

There is already a search within thread function. Go up to the very top of the page... in the first grey bar, you'll see a drop down called "Thread Tools"... and the next one to the right says "Search thread". That search function limits the search to the thread you are already in.

Agreed, I also don't understand posting the same question 3 times in different places minutes apart?

They do not understand general forum usage or how we (typical users) use the new posts button to see all current threads. I have pondered, is the way most access the forum here the same on other forums, or are we unique?
