I have caught the dreaded 2 foot-itis. While knocking around, I ran across a fellow who owns a 1986 340 Sundancer who wishes to trade down (smaller). I have a 1994 290 Sundancer in excellent condition (when people see the boat they can't believe it is 15 years old). I do have a buddy with an 86 340 which I love-great big, roomy, twins-velvet drive...What should I be looking for when inspecting an older 340. I can handle the mechanical/electrical stuff ok. I noted couple of mentions about rotten stringers, deck delamination and leaking windows. Am I crazy for thinking about this-Your input pro or con will be appreciated. Has anyone done somethink like this out there? I do still owe some on my boat, I know a loan will have to be secured-any caveats with financing a vessel of this age (25-28000)?
Thanks for your input!:smt101

I did just what you are thinking about and wound up getting an '89 300SD because a 340 wouldn't fit my slip. We love the boat. You covered all the major problem areas with that vintage boat. Find the newest one you can in the best shape and have it surveyed. Those are alot of boat for the money. I'd imagine you could almost name your price right now.

Mike...he will be lucky to find a bank that will finance a 10 year old Sea Ray!! I talked with a few brokers a couple of weeks ago that told me that about the only thing getting paper these days are deals over $250K with 75% LTV and they go over you with a proctoscope.:smt009

You will fall in love with the old girl if you buy it. But your other girl will be jealous untill you sell her and pay off the bank. You will be a two boat owner for awhile. 340s are great boats, but please find one that has been upgraded. Engines,a/c,water heater, frig.,carpet, vinyl, pumps, hoses, all and more should have been replaced five years ago. There are 340s out there that has been loved and need to find a new lover. Don't be afraid to go on line and find the right match, even if you got to truck her across the country. She will be worth it.
