Your Opinions Please.........

This is a third vehicle? Maybe I'm missing something but your going to buy another vehicle to pull a dink around occasionally because the "looks" of a hitch on the car is objectionable? The purchase price, insurance, maintenance, extra repairs needed on a vehicle that sits (yes they do suffer from sitting too long) etc. The math doesn't add up to me, but that's just me I guess.

Jim, you just gave me a heck of a slap upside the head. Talk about a wakeup call. What you wrote was absolutely spot on and changed my mind about buying a third rig. It took me about 3 seconds of explaining that to GW and she agreed with you and me.

Thank you very much. On your behalf, I just donated the $17,500 I was going to spend on a third vehicle to my favorite charity, the "Beachcomber Diesel Fuel Burning Fund."

Sell or Trade in GW's vehicle for an SUV you both really like. Thus reducing the 3 vehicle thought back to two, and you can actually take the Whaler on trips behind the SUV to other lakes like she wants, wheras you WILL NOT tow very far with the Whaler behind GW's car, I can guarantee that.

Have to admit I could not understand why you want three cars, we did that when we had teenagers in the house but that was enough. My next vehicle will be an Acura SUV, nice motor.

Knoteasy, Just curious, what makes you say that?

Simply because GW's car is only rated for 1,000lbs. And if you look hard enough, Infinity does not really recommend towing with a G35. So by selling it, you
can get an awesome trade in value, or sell it yourself, then you could get a very nice, newer SUV that you can take anywhere, anytime you want. It would have to be an SUV that GW really liked, since it would likely be her daily driver. Good luck with towing behind the car. I hope it works out for you both.

Money well spent on "on my behalf". Wish I could help you spend it. Like your signature line says "there is no greater time spent than messing about on a boat" (or something like that). Enjoy it.

KnotEasy, I looked for a tow rating for her G35 and couldn't find one. The older G35's did have a 1000lb tow rating. I figure the boat and motor weight close 900 pounds. The trailer weighs probably another 250 or so. Even with it loaded with coolers and gear it likely won't come close to 1500.

Likely our tows with it will be 99% from home to the marina (8 miles) and an every-other-year trip out of town with the dinghy. This thing has so much torque that I'm not afraid of overloading it, and the brakes are dynamite.

That's a risk I'm willing to take.

We could trade her car in for an SUV, but we're so happy with her car that I'd hate to trade into something we might not like as well.

That Nissan (g35) is going to die an early death! If you tow with it, the trans will suffer! Don't do it! Trade it, or plan on spending the 17k on repairs

This... FYI, The Whaler is 820lbs.+ dry weight, the 40hp Merc is 216 lbs. = 1,036 lbs then add the trailer. Likely still under 1,500 lbs.

I recently traded my Mercedes c300 for a 2014 Nissan Rogue, needed more room for folks and marina visits , but while shopping I see that the Crv was #1 and the Nissan was tied for second with the Mazda cx5. Although my tow rating is only around 1000lbs w/AWD I don't plan on towing but I do get 33MPG !!!! I just don't like the look of the Hondas. And in 3 yrs I'll be back to a German car that's for sure !! There just is no comparison. This is my first lease vehicle that's always something to consider.if you don't like it you'll be returning it.

He's towing 8 miles 1 way occasionally. I have my doubts he'll need 17K worth of repairs for that little bit!

Well this afternoon was a lot of fun. We went to three dealerships, looked at and drove three Terrains. All were 2012's, all SLT-2 trim level, fully equipped, all with similar miles.

We ended up with one and I'll post photos tomorrow. It's dark here and you wouldn't be able to tell what it looks like.

Now if you recall, I absolutely love negotiating for cars and trucks. Love it!!!

The difference between what the highest "Give me your best difference price" offer and what I ended up buying it for, was a bit less than $6,100. Again, that was a bit under $6,100 that I saved by being a firm negotiator. And that's on a 2012 vehicle.

That's just freaking amazing that there could be that much difference between the top and bottom numbers on a truck like this.

The highest price guy was an absolute jerk. We didn't get along from the start of things when I told him I wouldn't do a test drive with him along. That pi$$ed him off. He said their insurance requirements prohibited it, so I politely thanked him and we headed back towards our car. He asked where we were going and I told him I liked to take a test drive with just the two of us and if that's what their requirements were, then thanks, but no thanks.

All of a sudden his insurance requirements went out the window. But what really pi$$ed him off was that I had taken control of the whole scenario and he didn't like being taken out of his game. He also got pi$$ed when I refused to give him my SSAN and sign his document that clearly stated I was applying for credit through the dealership and was giving them blanket permission to contact me electronically, by voice, by text, by email, etc.

He said they needed that to run a "Red Report" to verify I was not a terrorist. BULLSH!T.

We hadn't even gotten around to discussing numbers and he wanted all that information. BULLSH!T.

When we left he was not smiling.

But GW has her truck and she loves it....and she was smiling!

Hopefully you got the V6 Terrain. That GM 2.4L 4cyl, is noisy and a slug in the Terrain. Plus the 4cyl. only tows 1,500 lbs. Glad you found something GW liked, and at the right price.

We did get the V6. It's the 3.0L. That was one of my list of requirements in any vehicle we bought. It will tow 3,500 pounds, and that's more than enough.

I'm curious what a terrorist is going to with a Terrain? Glad you all found what you wanted. I love negotiating with car dealers too. I always end up with the owner or GM. Everybody else ain't worth my time.
