Your inputs To 340 Camper Canvas

No doubt about that! My boat is at T.I.M. still. It'll be there 'til Mon PM. Then, I'll finally take it home! If you happen by, it's on a wash rack.

My wife has literally told me that she would rather get shiny, new camper canvas than update her vehicle to a newer, non-mini-van-soccer-mom, car.

Just saw this thread.

Is this set up a trick question, or did you just fall into a trap?

On the plus side. . .you got new canvas. On the minus side. . .how long until your wife asks for the newer, non-mini-van-coccer-mom car? I think it will be six months tops.

You are aware that this was an "and" and not an "or" resolution, right? If you expect this to be an "and". . . . .good for you! If you thought this was an "or". . .oi. . .I feel for you.

Comsnark,

You're a smart man, but I may have the upper hand in this one. I've waaayyyy over-extended myself this year in buying into a company up to 25% this year. I still have to come up with 3.5% worth of the entire Corporation. I've let her know that not only am I competely broke, but I'll be broke for the rest of the year.

The good news is that the company is a finance corporation which owns two used car lots and one 10-bay garage. I can get that slightly used luxury sedan for about the same amount that I can get for a 5 year old mini-van-soccer-mom-pseudo SUV-4 wheel drive vehicle, in blue. Well, it'd be about 10 boat dollars more or 2 340-and-over boafft bucks. (Break out another f'n five thousand).

My Admiral would never buy the "But honey. . .we're broke!" argument. This is a primary reason that I ensure that I am never waaaayyyy overextended. :)

Of course. . that is a bit of a vicious circle. She knows I am not overextended; and therefore knows that I am not broke. Knowing that there is $100 left in the checking account means that she can spend $125 because I SURELY have some extra cash squirrled away somewhere.

For me, the hard part is that I am buying the next car for myself. . .that will be suitably ugly, based on research to date. Cars seem to depreciate faster than boats!

But it sounds like you know what you are in for. . .good luck!

Thanks.

A man comes home late for work. His wife asks him where he has been. He responds that he was getting a tattoo. She asked why? what? where? He responded that he got a $100 bill tattoed on his private part. She asked why? He said that he likes to watch his money grow, he likes to play with his money, and the next time she felt like she needed to go shopping, she could just stay home to blow a hundred bucks.

He woke up in the hospital. I guess he didn't think that one through all the way.

An elderly woman is in bed. Her husband begins to rub his hand over her shoulders and down her arms, then softly along her lower back and outside her thighs. She begins to get in the mood and she scootches over toward him, but he has stopped touching her. So, she asks, "What's wrong?" "What?" he replies. "You stopped touching me. I was enjoying that." "Oh, I'm sorry," he answers. "I found the remote."

Do our wives know each other? They follow the same logic!

Yeah. . this is why I have not revealed my work bonuses for the last several years. She knows I get some incentives each year, but I don't talk about it. I think she thinks it is on order of 5%. . .but they have been closer to 10-15% the last few years.

Like I said. . . . it is a bit of a vicious circle. She won't listen to me regarding how much she can spend. . .so I don't tell her how much she has to spend.

I am expecting "extra" bonus money to dry up in three years -> and then everything is likely to hit the fan. Unless I get promoted (which is not an unreasonable assumption).

Great Gal!

Comsnark... I've seen my wife on csr a few times. Yours may know more than you think.lol

Well, truth be told I am more worried about my MECHANIC and my DEALER reading the posts. . . . . .

. . . and thank goodness, she isn't the forum type!

Here is a picture of the camper canvas we had made for our 340 DA. It becomes a screened in room when the strataglass is rolled up! We also had U-shaped zippers installed in the front isenglass. No more walking around outside to close up when it rains!

John, that looks fantastic! I'd love to get a rough idea of the price range for a custom-built unit. We were toying with the idea of getting a TaylorMade FastBack camper enclosure but I'm not 100% sold on the "bubble" look of it. Those are Do It Yourself and they currently have them on special for around $2,300, regularly $2,900.

Thanks!

Simon

Thank you. The back 1/2 was probably around $3500 or $4000. Strataglass adds a lot in price, but much more in enjoyment and value as it lasts a lot longer than non coated vinyl.

Big pluses - Strataglass. The optics are near perfect, and water sheds off it like it was oiled. The rear corners are not major intersections of panels. The rear side pieces wrap around and extend forward about 6 or 8 inches. This avoids the big holes in the back corners, or tough zipper junctions. The top has a flap which extends over the zippers. I recommend at least a 3" flap, and I'm going to secure mine down with snaps every couple of feet. They get wet and lift up - this allows the zippers to get wet. With wind, they are not water tight.

Imperfections - There are two cross bars for support - the original one attached to the arch, and a new one at the very back. There are zippered panels inside to wrap around the cross bars and hold it in place. One side of the flap sits snugly against the bar. This side needs to be toward the back of the boat. The flap pulls the top down firmly against the bar and allows water to puddle if on the up-hill (front) side. Puddled water on fabric will leak.

My back bar seems too wide to me. While using the aft part of the walk-around, you are leaning out. Also, it looks wide from the back. That being said, the interior is extremely comfortable. You can lean back in any seat without hitting canvas with your head.

I had mine made with screen inserts for some of the side pieces. You zip out the glass and store it, then zip in the screens. The screens don't take up any storage room at all.

Did anyone who has gone the custom route ever consider a single upper piece of canvas behind the Arch? My 260DA's canvas is a lot like the ones I see in your pictures in that it has a second Bimini that zips to the short one behind the arch. If I still have my boat when it comes time to replace the canvas, I am going to have a canvas maker make that whole top section out of one piece of canvas. We never take our second rear bimini down anyway so it would make sense for me. Plus I think you would have a cleaner look that is less prone to leaks with a single piece as well..
