Your burger choice when grilling on the boat

We use Costco burgers too. They have a nice lean 9% burger and they also have a Sirloin burger that's really good. We have the Magma Newport Grill and yes with the burgers that are not lean, the BBQ looks like the Luxor in Vegas with flare ups. Get lean meat.

Not a huge fan of the frozen burger, but from a practical standpoint a stack of frozen burger patties from Costco can't be beat. Keep 'em frozen and pull out what you need when you need it.... And yes the Magma round kettle BBQ can get quite intense with the heat it produces.

What no vegetarians or vegans? They must be on the rag boat site.

Just got back from the store with some Bubba Burgers, Boca Burgers (veg), and real hamburger...

Grill is heating up now...

I'll have an independent taste test to post in a bit... with pictures...

(Good thing the box is labeled "burger" because it sure doesn't look like a burger)

What kind of Bubba Burgers did you get? I have to agree with you about the shape. The bubbas always remind me of a big clover leaf.

Its not a valid test unless your cooking on the boat!

In 4 to 8 foot seas,

But really, Bubba, veggie, cardboard, corn flakes. just dash with a liberal amount of Tabasco a large cup of strong black coffee, and all is good... Of course my being ex-Army probably factors in some.

I've never tried the Bubba line, so I can't enter an opinion. I really like the individually Cryovac-ed burgers from Omaha Steaks. I throw 'em into the cooler frozen, never have to worry about the package "bleeding" out into the ice as they thaw, and I can cook them from any degree of frozen to completely thawed. They are fairly lean too, so the flareup problem is pretty manageable.

I'll have to get some Bubbas to try at home. As some of you may have read, I have a pair of old Magma kettles (one gas, one charcoal) mounted on a roll around rack that I use on the patio, so it will be ALMOST like the boat. Well, except for the fact that I'll be wearing a parka and longies instead of a tee shirt and bathing suit............

Cheers,

OK... The highly scientific test is done...

I actually cook with fresh hamburger meat. I make patties up in 1/3 of a pound and then freeze them. If you don't have a Foodsaver, I highly recommend one:

MMMmmmmm... fresh burger meat is entry #1:

Then I got out the Bubba Burgers I bought at the local supermarket today:

Geez... they look awful... Looks like a truck ran them over...

And to be fair to the vegitarians, I got some Boca Burgers:

and these things, which come pre-freezer burned, look like the felt pads you put on the bottom of a chair as to not scratch the floor:

And here they all are ready for the grill:

The Bubba Burgers have instructions to not press them and wait until "juices" ooz out of the top before flipping them... I did that... The Bubba Burgers also flamed up like crazy. It was hard to control the fire under them. Because of that, they got a little "crispy". The Boca Burgers (veggy) didn't really do anything on the grill. They just laid there... The real burgers were made from 96% lean beef... no flames.

Here they are cooked:

A fresh Kaiser roll that was toasted and some fresh shredded chedder and tomato for the "real" Hamburger:

And for the Bubba Burger (dripping with fat juices)

And the veggy Boca Burger didn't deserve a bun... that sh!t went in the trash can:

Cut the burgers in half to serve to our independent taste judge:

And here's the judge I used... she was just sitting around looking for something to do (blindfolded so she could not cheat):

And here's the result:

She went to the FRESH BURGER FIRST and ate it... And before I could get the Bubba Burger up, she went to the Bubba Burger...

In a post test interview, she would not disclose which one she liked better....

So I tried them...

The Bubba is actually not bad. However, the thing is 25% fat which gives it the flavor. Also, the thing flares up the grill really bad and burns the outside before the frozen inside is done... I think that's why you are not supposed to press them on the grill as it would be like throwing gas on a fire... But in a pinch, not a bad thing to have on the boat.

God, I wish I had that much free time.....pretty funny though, I'll give props for the execution but I gotta deduct for that orange colored shredded stuff. I noticed the first judge discarded the rolls. Atkins?

Very funny Gary, I couldn’t hold back from laughing and got a few looks when I scrolled down to your judge.

Of any frozen burger I have experienced.. Bubba burgers are by far the best quality and taste hands down. They are not the run of the mill cheap pressed burgers they are pretty darn good, if I can't get homemade they do just fine.

They have to be cooked frozen and YES only turn once!!!! I like the onion ones

Hey since we all need the fat to clog our arities a little bit more where is the bacon that should have been on top or at the very least some mushroom. (Grin)
ps: I did like your scientific methods used in this experiment. What happened to the veggie thing?

I just don't like the name "Bubba Burger"... I gives a ring like only someone who would strap a gray land-based DirecTV sat dish on the front of their boat would actually cook these...

We can't do those real fatty burgers on the boat, even though I like them better. It's just too messy. Grease flying everywhere, flames shooting out of the top, smoke billowing under the canvas. 2 burgers equals about 2 hours of cleanup afterward.

You mean like that overloaded boat guy? Do you think he's eating Bubba Burgers?
