In discussing the grilling on the boat topic with my esteemed diesel owner friend Skip last night, he told me he uses frozen "Bubba Burgers" when he grills on the boat. He also stated that nothing is better than a Bubba Burger in a George Foreman Grill. Now this is a guy that thinks there is nothing better than a cold military MRE while under a plastic tarp in a fox hole in the middle of the night in a desert in Iraq, so I'm not so sure his quisine is "normal." I'm off to the store, however, to try out this "Bubba Burger" product for lunch and will report back... I may have to add this to the "Feeding the Masses" chapter before it goes to press....

What do you use for your burger choice when grilling out on the boat? (McDonalds doesn't count... I know all the Franks are going to answer with a restaurant name...)

One of our local grocery stores takes ground beef and ground up bacon and mixes them together....that is my favorite to grill n the boat!!

I'm a fan of Costco burgers. I havent grilled on the boat yet. This year will be my first opportunity. I have a magma grill, but I'm a little worried about the mess that burgers will create.

If not homemade, I concur with the Bubba Burger crowd. They are good quality. Of course, when grilling, one needs a pretty good flame.

I'm with Skip on the Bubba Burger thing... and I've never seen, let alone eaten, an MRE. And it needs to be cooked over open flame. With a fresh roll. And some really nice eastern shore tomatoes. Jersey tomatoes will do in a pinch. :smt043

When you cook a Bubba Burger, it is important that you follow the instructions... i.e. flip it only once. I've found that this is very important. The burger gets tough if it is flipped too many times [I'm sure someone will read something perverted into that last sentence:grin:].

This answer is not directly on point but...

I found grilling ground meat on a Magma butane grill to be an exercise in fire control and how many red welps I could take on my forearms. So, it is marinated chicken breast burgers on our boat.

I'll second the Bubba Burgers, we like the ones with the Vidalia Onions or the Jalapenos. Since we are talking burgers you also have to have some hot dogs on the grill so we go with the Ballpark or Hebrew National.

That's an issue with the quality/type of meat you get. If you get a 90% lean hamburger, it won't flame as much (if at all). If you get 70% lean (i.e. 30% fat), it's like a starter log for a fireplace. Of course the 70% lean will have more "flavor".

I'm off to the store to get some of these Bubba Burgers... I'll take pictures. I will say I have a firm belief meat should not be purchased from the frozen food section... but we shall see.

Ah, just in time for the spring. Another grilling thread. Very popular. I predict 2,000 views and 50 posts by the end of Sunday.

My wife makes a mix of chopped sirloin, an egg, chopped onion and scalions, and bread crumbs. Nothing compares.

My favorite topping is blue cheese and fried onions.

I buy a box of frozen burgers, not sure who makes them. Actually, I think they were shut down last year for e coli or something. Anyway, all of our meat is frozen and taken to the boat each weekend. don't have to worry as much about transporting bloody meat and getting stuck in traffic etc...

Bubba Burgers are great on the grill. However if you do cook one on your Foreman grill it may change your mind about them and eating burgers in general. One Bubba burger will fill the grease catch all by itself....it's pretty scary after cooking one with your Foreman grill. But if you're like me, do that once, it will scare you, and all you'll do is go back to cooking on the bbq grill so you don't think about the grease. Out of site out of mind.

Homemade is the only way to go. Ground beef, fat gives it the flavor. 1lb burger, 1 scramble egg, bread crumbs, dried onion salt and pepper to taste. It is the absolute best, well for us anyway.

One of the better burgers I had was in Little Harbor,Bahamas and Wally's in Marsh Harbor, Bahamas.....maybe it was the Mojito's......

Bubba Burgers and like festivus said follow the instructions and flip once when the blood comes to the top...

And if we're talking restaurants Five Guys is the winner! Unless you live in Prospect Park, PA in which case it would be Charlie's right off of 420 near MacDade.

But I digress. Now, I'm getting hungry! And it's right around lunchtime in the East...

I'll cast my vote for Bubba Burgers Angus - fantastic. It's really about being fairly easy on the boat and these are cooked from frozen state. Top off with bacon and cheese and of course cold beer...

The degree to which you appreciate what you have to eat (e.g. cold meal ready to eat (MRE)) (or worse) depends entirely on how hungry you are. When you are cold, wet, tired and have not eaten for a couple days, an MRE is heaven on earth. I consider it a blessing that my biggest worry these days, from a culinary perspective, is to go for the Bubba with vidalia onions or without.

Life is really good.

When I was a young lieutenant I had the great good fortune to attend the Republic of Korea Army Ranger course. The ROKs give you all the food you want-but restrict your water intake. In the summer in Korea, running up and down the hills around Uijongbu, this takes the "suck factor" to an entirely new level. That is a whole 'nother thread.

My esteemed diesel colleague and I come from very different culinary perspectives.
Which is why we so enjoy visiting Bistro Chez Gary for the really good chow.

regards
