I work for a local municipality. Having a keen interest in boating, and all things nautical, I keep an eye on Marinetraffic.com every so often, as we have one industry in town that a ship comes into a few times a year. Our coverage is spotty here, there is one receiver owned by a local HAM operator. So I brought it up with our IT manager, saying, hey, we have a great fibre network, 24/7 power, why not see what they say. So we filled in the application, and today this arrived:

Cool!

Now we need to see if we can get a donated VHF antenna, as we don't have a budget for this.

So... This translates the Marine traffic AIS signals onto your network, and then transmits it on VHF??

This takes the AIS information from the transceiver on the ship, and feeds its to the MarineTraffic.com site. So anyone watching the site can see where the ships are.

Very cool! so as long as you have internet you can access local AIS information?
