You gotta regatta in Islamorada 2009

By the way - to all my genius fellow South Florida SeaRayers.

I'm interested in finding a route that lets me run the ocean to the Miami Area and ducking inside and taking the ICW route from there on to IslaMorada.

I want this route because I despise all of the no wake zones between here and Port of Miami. So I'm thinking the best route is to take the ocean route from Hilsboro Inlet down to the Port of Miami and then duck in to the ICW. Does that sound logical?

My next challenge is, once I'm in the ICW, how do I get back to Holiday Isle, which is on the Ocean Side - I know there's a bridge there but is it clear out to 'exit' out of the ICW and bee-line for that bridge with enough water underneath that I'll not be white-knuckling it?

Thanks for the advice.

-Tim

Tim, your plan is right on. You can take the ocean side and once you past Key Biscayne, you can come back inside to the ICW and head down until you get to Islamorada. You can go under the bridge which is about 2 miles north of Holiday Isle. The bridge is high enough for the sportfish yachts as well.

I don't know how to show the photo of the channel and the waterways to attach it here.

Tell me how to do it and I will post it up.

One question, I saw you posted a photo of Biscayne Bay on another thread with the marker symbols. Where did you get that?

Hey Gator,
That's cool - how did you get that route to show up on the map?

Also, I wonder why you head out to the ocean near Aligator Reef just to come around and pull into Holiday Isle on the Ocean Side - why not just shoot around the back side? Is there depth concerns that way?

Thanks again,
Tim

Hey John, I forgot to ask - you are getting a room at the holiday inn - what are you doing with your boat? I have reserved a slip at Holiday Isle and I'll be living aboard for the long weekend.

I'm sure there's still slips available there if you want to berth near me.

Sounds like a plan Tim. Looking forward to getting out there for the weekend. We (wife and I) will actually be out there Friday night through Tuesday. Our daughter (college student at FSU) and a couple of her friends may join us as well. It will be nice to meet someone from the board and to go to the event with a couple of boats together.

It would be nice to meet up for cocktails in the coming weeks before the trip. Kind of a meet and greet. But our schedule looks really full over the next few weeks - going to FSU to "evacuate" our daughter, resurfacing the pool, resurfacing the pool deck, testing out the new Aquaglide floating island, etc. I'll shoot you a PM with my contact info.

Are you staying on the hook or at a hotel? What dates are you staying?

Anyone else on here going to the Bash?:smt038

We are trailering down. Small boat; easy to do - 220SD. Will make a good ride if we want to go cruise around but not lose a spot on the sandbar.

Anyway, I will probably just reload the trailer each night. PITA, but cost effective. I can put $50 - $60, or whatever it is, per night to booze. There are two good places to launch in Key Largo - Pennekamp State Park and the Caribbean Club. Both about $10 to launch. My plan is to get the boat in the water relatively early each day (between 9 and 10) and head out to the sandbar. That will give us a nice cruise of around an hour to get to the sandbar. I figure that if we head in by 6 or 7 each night, we should be in good shape.

Yeah but how will you avoid the grog all day? LOL.

A little "Hair of the Dog"... Nothing better than starting all over again first thing in the morning...

I do have a bit of a problem though. Maybe you can help me out. Trying to decide on the volume of Jell-O shots to bring. I was thinking about two doezen per day. Do you think that will be adequate? Remember, we'll have to hand them out to the friendly, (soon to be) topless lasses cruising on by.

LOL, I like the way you think John, my boy! Hmm... Since there's always room for Jell-O, I think you have the volumes about right. After all, my experience with Jello shots is the folks that make them give most of them away as party favors, haha.

I'm just worried about you cruising an hour home after the festivities...

Make sure after you trailer up you shoot back over to Holiday Isle Marina for the evening parties - we'll have prime real estate in the Marina since we'll be getting there early!

Thanks for the concern. My daughter will be there also to help command the ship. She's not a big drinker. And we will DEFINATELY make it back down for evening festivities! Good thing cab rides aren't expensive!

SO, the weekend is getting closer by the day! It is getting time to regatta at Islamorada! Besides Tim and myself, is there anyone else heading down? My wife and I will be leaving around 1 PM. Given that we probably won't make better than 65 MPH on the trip down, I figure we should be there around 7 or 8. We will have one stop in Fort Myers. I know, it sounds like a long time to get from Clearwater to Islamorada, but I don't like to push my Durango that hard. Usually just set the cruise at 60 and forget it.

The boat is at the mechanic as we speak to take care of a nasty clacking sound that developed in my outdrive. All fingers point to the ginbal bearing. Shop said he could have it fixed by tomorrow night. While I think that I could do it, I would prefer to start on a Saturday and have a Sunday to finish if necessary. C'est la vie.

But when we get there it will be full steam ahead baby!!! Tim, what time are you going to be getting down to the Holiday Isle?

My buddy that's coming with me gets into FLL at 1230 - we'll probably depart the Hillsboro Inlet about 130 and boom straight down - likely arrive around 4 or 5 - we'll beat ya, LOL.

The Lorelei is having a party for all us Bashers on Friday night from 4P to question marks. Looking very forward!
