I want to get Yeti 45 cooler as a x-mas gift to myself and secure it on the swim platform of my 2005 340 Sundancer. My boat is currently shrink wrapped and in winter storage so it is not accessible until spring. The cooler is roughly 16" high. If secured (tied down) in the center of the swim platform will it cover the rear transom navigation light? How high is the rear nav light from the swim platform.

Thanks

One tip, something I did when I had a Yeti on the boat.

I had a decal made (smaller) that was the same as the boat name. Put that on the side of the Yeti...

Love those coolers.

I believe this will definitely cover your stern light. Your light is below the hole for your shore power, correct?

The permanent cooler mounts I've seen seem to always be offset to avoid the light. It also makes the swim platform more usable when the cooler is mounted out there. Mount it opposite your transom door, all the way starboard and it won't be nearly as annoying when you the platform access.

An interesting question for the pro's around here - does a 34' boat "need" a stern light in addition to a masthead light? Seems like there is a size cutoff for needing both...

To Footballfan, I like that idea, thanks!
To Stee6043, No the light is above the hole for shore power. I had thought about moving the cooler to starboard side of the swim platform but the base for the BBQ is there, It will probably interfere. I won't know for sure until the shrink wrap comes off.

I all my boats with a masthead light and a stern light, the masthead only provided 225 degrees of forward coverage while the stern covered the remaining 135 degrees. The anchor setting turns on the masthead fore and aft light. One would have to re wire the system so the anchor light was on if it was legal. Also do not forget, a 340 DA of that era was not 34 feet, closer to 37 feet if it matters.

You can use a 360 all around mast light on a boat this size in place of the 225/135 configuration. I rewired my stern light to the locker light switch and put a 360 LED on the arch for navigation. Stern nav light killed my night vision. Easy to rewire up top if you want to use the exiting light also.

We use the Yeti Hopper 2 soft cooler as our cockpit cooler. Love it.

Good to know.

Best definition I could find:

LENGTH (L) is the horizontal distance between the outboard side of the foremost part (bow) of the hull and the outboard side of the aftermost part (stern) of the hull. It does not include bowsprits, rudders, outboard motor brackets, swim platforms that do not contain buoyant volume, and other similar fittings and attachments that are not part of the buoyant hull envelope.

Thanks for the replies, but I'm not really keen on rewiring the transom nav light. I was hoping the light would be higher than the cooler. I know I should have checked this before shrink wrapping but whats done is done.
Does anybody know what the height to the bottom of the transom nav light from the swim platform is?

In the "for what it's worth" category I'm not sure the height of your cooler will really matter, Rick. The cooler will obstruct a certain amount of the stern lights visibility no matter whether it's 1/2" above or 3" above. If a Coastie wants to give you a hard time...they can give you a hard time.

I bet half of the dinghy owners I know run davits that obstruct the stern light when running dinghy-up at night time.

If you really want the center mount just go for it. You can pull the cooler inside when you're returning to port at night if it makes you feel better. No big deal...

How does the CG measure boats? I'm 38 at waterline and 43 overall.

So let's see how to apply this. Your swim platform would would count at it appears to me to have 'buoyant volume", where as Stee6043 platform does not?

I think a swim platform needs to be molded into the hull to be considered part of the length. Ours are bolt-on and containing no voids, so they would not be considered. Some of the newer SRs are molded in, so I guess those would be considered part of the length. Interestingly some of the newer SRs are actually smaller than the older ones for a given model.

The "your" was about KevinC's 340 pictured in his posts. It appears to me to be a part of the boat as the rub rail contiguously goes around the swim platform.

Both boats mentioned in my post are pictured in this thread.

Do others agree with this?

I think that is a big reason why the 340SDA was eventually upgraded and transformed into the 370DA. Its funny that my old 260DA with a bolt on swim platform was actually registered as a 28' - I don't think most people have a real understanding of the measurement requirements. However, there are some marinas that do reserve the right to charge you for the total length regardless of what is registered as many people add extensions, etc.

Could you temporarily attach something like this to your Yeti?
