I had one back in the late 80’s early 90’s. It was a Mariner, made by Yamaha. I now have nice 2.5hp 4stroke and it sure makes a 7.6 dinghy rock. But it’s heavy at nearly 50#, this is 22#. The 4stroke is fun at port. But it’s a bitch getting on/off zodiac when traveling. So I did some research and I can get a brand new Yamaha out of Hong Kong for $300 USD, and $150 ship. It fits in a hanging locker on boat, and great for going shore when traveling. These people are big company and seem reputable. And said the can ship to MD. Question it seems you can’t get a 2 stroke anymore. But these guys said no problem, ship to house. Give me a reason not to do this. $450 for an unobtanium 2 stroke is cheap. Pic attached

I would be more concerned that it will never show up. The EPA required all outboard engines to meet EPA emission standards commencing in 2006. In theory some fuel injected two strokes could qualify but I don't know a single one sold in the US that does.

In other words .......you would be importing an outboard that does not meet US emissions standards and could/would be confiscated at the port of entry. In addition to that.......there are fines and all sorts of legal things the US government can do to you.

I would be really tempted to roll the dice though......22 lbs.......

Maybe they could write: "Portable Fan" on the box to get it through.

So, not legal to import, the question is whether you care about breaking the law (no snark intended) and how much the $450 means to you if it gets impounded.

(22 pp, 1.04 MB, EPA-420-B-11-015, March 2011, About PDF) provides a summary of EPA requirements for importing vehicles and engines.

The Clean Air Act prohibits importation into the United States of any motor vehicle, motor vehicle engine, nonroad engine and equipment that does not conform to the EPA emission standards and requirements. These standards apply to all vehicles and engines including imported motor vehicles, heavy-duty engines, nonroad engines, (generators, watercraft, and lawn and garden equipment), and recreational vehicles, whether they are new or used, manufactured domestically or abroad.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for, guess I’ll pass (dammit I really wanted it). Other thing is for all the 2 strokes sold they are impossible to find for sale. Guess those who have one aren’t giving them up.

I would check with a Yamaha dealer in Mexico near the boarder. Buy it and drive it accross, no one would know what they are looking at.

Most one off items find their way through the ports without issue. Think about the volume for a moment and the ability to inspect/enforce is extremely low on one off items unless the shipper or the receiver is on a Watch list.

There was a guy in Maryland about 10 years ago who started buying gas powered Mopeds direct from China. He started small buying 5 and selling them for 5x what he paid for them. He advertised them on Craigslist and developed a cash business around them. The EPA caught up with him I believe on 4th or 5th sea container full of these things. Since they did not meet US emissions standards AND he hadn't paid taxes on them.......he got into serious trouble which included millions in fines and seizing his assets.

That said.....22 lbs and a two stroke.........."It is a Yamaha.....how could it be illegal?";)

That’s a long drive for Pirate Lady from MD to Mexico and back.

I saw lots of Chinese outboards (two and four stroke) that are sold on Craigslist that look like junk. I’m guessing they got in like the mopeds did. Yamaha imports two stroke motorcycles. I would order it at that price. Likely the worst case is it gets seized and you are out the $450. Buying one they aren’t coming after you. Now if you were buying a container full...be prepared to spend some time in federal court.

I got lucky and found a 3.5 hp 2-stroke Tohatsu a few years ago. It's marketed as many other brands and weighs a whopping 27 lbs. It don't use it much, but it' way quieter than the louder air cooler 4 strokes. The weight makes it easy for anybody to throw on the dink.

So been thinking. Besides property tax. And slip fees coming in July. Gonna wait til August, but know guys, gonna give it a shot. I really want this and i really dont see getting jammed up in fed court over a tiny engine. Like someone said, prolly worst can happen is it dont show. “I didnt order that! Identify theft.”
WTH! Will let you know what happens. If Feds got nothing better to do than hassle me over a a 2 stroke 2hp engine well i guess they bored.

You're getting scammed for sure. I've seen those cheap overseas sites for marine engines that show up deep on a Google search. Don't be a fool.....

About 15 years ago you could buy ATV from China. Knew 2 people who got them and then they started ordering them for friends. In all I think the got 40 of them. Looked looked worked well. If parts were needed you were out of luck.
