XM vs. Sirius debate is over

Ye with the email I got today looks like nothing is going to happen for a year or so.

Here is the email I got from Srius today

February 19, 2007

To: SIRIUS Subscribers

Today is a very exciting day for SIRIUS customers. As you may have heard, SIRIUS Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio are merging to form the nation's premier audio entertainment provider.

This combination of our two offerings will benefit you - our loyal listeners. As a single company, we'll provide superior programming to you every day with the best of both SIRIUS and XM. Currently, XM and SIRIUS broadcast a wide range of commercial-free music channels, exclusive sports coverage, news, talk, and entertainment programming. Howard Stern. Oprah and Friends. The NFL. MLB. NBA. ESPN. CNBC. Fox News. Additionally, the combined company will be able to improve existing services such as real-time traffic information and rear-seat video as well as introduce new ones.

After shareholder and regulatory approvals, we anticipate that the combination will be finalized by the end of 2007. Until then, both companies will continue to operate independently. We will continue to provide you with the uninterrupted service - as well as the outstanding customer support - that you have come to expect and enjoy from SIRIUS. We do not anticipate any changes in your service during the merger process, however, please call our customer care team on 1- 888-539-7474 should you have any questions.

We look forward to the many benefits this combination will offer and continuing to make your listening experience an enjoyable one - offering more of the Very Best Radio on Radio.

Stay tuned,

Mel Karmazin, CEO

I am not liking this one bit!!!!!!!!!!! :smt013

Frank....you ain't been watching the advertising lately. Bellsouth and AT&T and Cingular are now all AT&T....We are full circle now. :smt021

Ok maybe I look at things a little different but there is one positive to this all. Lets say you are a big MLB and NFL fan and like to listen to all the games. I know for us we had both (wife likes XM for radio and I like Sirius for sports). Right now you have to have both. Sirius for NFL and XM for Baseball. With the combination of the two hopefully you can buy one service and get all the sports without worry. It is the same thing that makes me mad about Cable vs Direct TV. Because we choose cable can not get the NFL ticket. However that is the only reason that I would purchase Direct TV and have choosen to pass on it for the time being. I am of the opinion if it is available make it available to everyone and then let me decide if the price is right to purchase it or not.

i think that we can be fairly sure, whether or not this deal is allowed, that the day will come when we will have to pay extra for extras, JUST like we do with cable and satellite TV. right now is still the honeymoon period for this medium. as time goes by, there will be different packages and formats offered - probably even PPL (pay-per-listen). most of us, like sheep, will be led to the slaughter!

look at what's going on now with baseball's impending deal with direct tv. exclusivity. that means cable & dish customers who used to have access to 14 or so baseball games every day of the season, are now going to be completely shut out unless they switch to directTV - i guess that's the idea. THAT is something the FCC should get involved with. talk about a monopoly!

in the same vein, the contract that xm has with MLB and that sirius has with the NBA and NFL will expire at some point, and the next contract will be more expensive. consequently, the expense will be passed on to the consumer. that's just the way it is. :smt009

looks like the debate isn't over!

would the possibility of one company eliminate the bidding war for special programing such as NFL or MLB and thereby reduce the the contract cost to the company?

It's possible. There is a good article in today's Wall Street Journal about the possible changes to satellite radio services on page D1. Savings related to the purchase of programming in one of the positive effects mentioned.

You got it right. I truly do hope this merger goes through. Otherwise, we'll be left with one anyway right? The one that can stand up the longest.

I am a Sirius subscriber and made that choice based on those around me and the package deals (including Stern). But when I purchased another subscription for my Dad, I really struggled with the idea since MLB would have been really great since he liked to listen to our old-hometown team. But the same with football, so....

We live in an area where there are two decent local stations, and any other is hit or miss depending on how much static you can tolerate. Sirius solved that!

We use XM in the Admirals Tahoe. It's just about to run out of the free 3 month trial. It' won't get renewed. :smt018

On problem Sirius has is management. I signed up for service from April 15, 2006 to October 15, 2006. Last week I got multiple phone calls to my answering machine from a large overseas country saying that I would lose my service in 30 days if I did not pay my bill. Of course, I had already paid through October 15, 2006. Apparently that included an extra 3-4 months. It will be interesting to see what happens when I reup this year. :smt017
