I'm looking to replace my factory Clarion with either the Clarion CMD6 or the CMD8......I also have a Wet Sounds sub and 5 channel amp....what say you?

thanks

Personally, I like the CMD6, it's blue tooth capable and has plenty of inputs. Btw, you will love your Wet Sounds, a buddy just installed one of there systems and it sounds great!

thanks Matt.......I got that MB Quart amp you recommended also...looking forward to warmer weather so I can get started.

what does " Wylie or Hifirush" in the title mean? Are those members here?

Yes, and they are audio professionals. If you look up their posts, you will find a wealth of useful information on boat sound systems.

Just note, both are out of production and the 6 is WAY out of production. Any Clarion accessories for the 6 and possibly the 8, are also discontinued as they dont interface with the new models. I would go with the CMD8. If you are trying to mate with your existing 6 pin remotes, look at the 8 real close to see if its still the 6 pin or if its the newer 8 pin. Cant recall if it was with the 8 or 9 that they changed. If you are replacing or installing remotes, then that doesnt matter, still go with the 8.

You can get an aftermarket BT that will connect to the rear AUX inputs. IIRC, the 8 has a 4th audio output thats always at 100% volume. This is great option for a boat with salon and deck speakers. Run that input through an EQ or other volume controller for the deck speakers, and the salon speakers can be turned down independently of the deck.

Wylie makes some good points. Both of these units are long out of production. But, the upfront cost is lower than new, cutting edge models and you can still find the accessories for them, granted you may have to turn to eBay for them. As for the remote pins, they both use the newer 8 pin cables, so it may not be compatible with your remotes, unless you change them.

The complaint I have heard about the 6’s bluetooth, is it is an external unit and is clumsy. There are a lot of options out there for bluetooth, (and frankly better thought out) so that shouldn’t stop you. But let me be clear and this is from the Clarion website. The CMD 6 has 6 channels out PLUS the pair that is fixed Wylie was mentioning, not the 8. If have a seperate “zone” with volume control, Wet Sounds makes a great seperate EQ/Volume controller that would let you do that, using that output. This is why I like the 6 over the 8, WMMV.

I hope this helps. I know you have come a long way and you are close!!!

I really appreciate all the recommendations.......you guys are the best.....to be perfectly honest here I'm looking for the easiest way to get IPod connectivity without completely remodeling the mounting area......for the least amount of money. It sounds like the 6 will give me some flexibility if I want to do some things down the road. Also sounds like I'll need to change the remote at the dash...wasnt planning on that but oh well. I can get the unit for under $300 brand new (not to hip on the refurbished units) and looks like the remote and a cable will run another $140.

thanks again

After clearing the fog, HiFi is correct. The 6 has the fixed level output mot the 8. I think I was picturing the cmd4 for the 6 and 6 for the 8, my mistake. Both the 6 and 8 have USB and both will run "I" devices. But, I dont recall if the 8 will run other USB devices, but I think the 6 will.

The 6 has 2 AUX inputs. Honestly, I would pass on the outdated clarion BT interface for the 6. Ive seen huge leaps in BT quality in just the past couple of years. I would go with a universal BT, like the Wet sounds WS-BTVC. Its got a 1V line level, so the signal is clean and strong and its easy to pair and auto-connect.

I bought a CMD 6 from Amazon, and they shipped me a CMD-8. Classic bait and switch. Don't assume that the CMD-6 is still available, unless you find a used one.

After some initial resistance, I put the CMD-8 in, and it works fine. I did have to change all my remotes though.....

We'll see what they send....I ordered the 6...the MW1 remote .....and the cable.

thanks all

I hope you get the 6!!! Let us know>

I'm not sure....I guess I'd need the remote splitter cable if I do.....it works while your out in the water right?

Yes...it can be used in the water...or anywhere. We use it quite a bit just sitting on the dock.
