WTB: Lofrans Progress 1 Parts

That's good info thanks. I think I will go ahead and swap out the post as well, and keep the old one as a spare.

Hello, This thread is perfect for my query, so I hope the late entry is OK. I have a Lofrans Marlin, which I think is earlier than, or the same as the Progress I. The finger is a homemade fabrication from aluminum plate (see photo), and does not allow the spring to tension it against the rope. I shall disassemble on Saturday but wonder if replacement parts or means of retrofit have been discovered. I have worn out my web browser... Anyone? With thanks, RON

I note that the top photo in this thread shows geometry different from the Marlin in the photo that I posted. See photo for the kit wanted by this unit - impossible to find, of course...

Nothing wrong with the homemade finger, the likely reason it doesn't apply pressure is the stud is bent. You can buy new studs and springs at least for the Progress 1. I'd call Lofrans.

The other ussue is the splice doesn't want to feed through the windlass after a while.

I finally just ordered 200' if windlass chain, and the finger is no longer needed. Great upgrade. Should have done it sooner.

You have a finger that will work in the photo, what you need is a new Spring which is available from P2 marine for about $24. Someone has swapped out the stud for an M8x40mm bolt which will also work just fine. I have found that sometimes adjusting the tension on that bolt will allow the spring to hold the finger tight against the chain, splice and rope as it passes around the gypsy. Check that before you buy more stuff...

Yep, but if possible, also make sure that bolt is shouldered where it passes through the finger and Loctite is your friend.

Another solution would be to convert to all chain. This makes the pressure finger superfluous. (I really just responded so I could say "superfluous")

Thanks for the kind reply. I shall disassemble the thing on Saturday and see how the mod was crafted. I'm going to cut off the 8 links of sub-par chain, and swap the rope end-for-end and resplice. I'll make a longer 'graduated' splice as to avoid having a 'lump' hit the spreader.

Hello Cocktail Time. Quite coincidentally, we've named our vessel "Twilight Time." I concur with your analysis and have scouted the parts that are available. I shall take the thing apart on Saturday and see what lies under the improvised finger.

Thanks to all for the really helpful comments. More digging and a post from here (perhaps a different thread) yielded "Dixon Precision - dixonprecision@gmail.com" as a source for newly manufactured 8 mm (long) and 9 mm (stubby) pressure fingers. The 8mm is for the older Lofrans Marlin that I am refurbishing. The attendant hardware is available from P2 Marine. I had contacted Lofrans, and they were most agreeable. They sent the (PDF) parts manual for the Marlin, and the operator's guide for their X-1 which replaces the Marlin.. "close enough for government work," as they say. I have high hopes, let's see what Saturday yields. I'm thinking the thing has been used but ignored since factory installation some 24 years ago. I may just put it on the bench, disassemble completely and see then if I can clean and lube everything and successfully put "Humpty" together again. mmmmm.......

Ron, Mike Dixon is a friend of mine and modeled his Progress 1 finger after the one on my boat. He is selling them through P2 marine but I think you can give him a try if he has any in his shop. But I wanted to clarify. Progress 1 models have an 8mm stud at least through 2001/2002 (that's why I suggested an M8 bolt) and there are newer model years of Progress 1 that have a 9mm stud that can also us an M9 bolt. The 9mm models use the "fat" finger.

I have the earlier model Progress 1 with the 8mm stud. When I bought the boat the bolt (not the stud, I think the prior owner already replaced the stud with a bolt) was bent and the spring was damaged. But I bought a new finger/spring kit (they were still available then) I just needed the spring, but the posts on CSR then said that the fingers were hard to find and not made any more. So I ordered one along with the spring. This was around 2010 I think.

The new finger was not the same shape as the old. It is "fatter", but the hole was 8mm. Anyway, I put it all together with a new M8 bolt, put a stainless washer on top and bottom of the finger, some blue locktight on the threads, and its been working fine since then (11 years). That said, it didn't really work well with the old stiff 5/8 rode and I have since put in 150ft of chain at the anchor before the old rode, so I rarely see the rope section any more and the chain doesn't really need the finger.

I probably have the original finger somewhere on the boat. I kept it as a spare, but I don't recall seeing it in a long while. I should probably sell the old one if I can find it.

Could not find finger part on p2 site. Do you have Mikes contact info? Thanks.
Sure, you can email him at the email in your previous post or his phone number is 770-789-7411. I've helped a dozen or so people with this windlass over the last few years and I really think all you need is the spring which is still available from P2.

I am trying to replace the spring on my lofrans marlin windlass. Is there anything holding the spring in the hole or does it just need a good dose of pb blast?

Nothing holing the sprint in the hole...it should slide up and off of the stud.

New addition....Actually looking for the top base plate. The piece that the post screws into for a lofrans Progress 1. Mine has a frozen post I was drilling out and broke an extractor tip in. It will have to go to a machine shop.

Looking for one to work on right now and swap out

Walter,
All of the replacement parts are readily available. The pressure finger for that specific windlass comes from Dixon Precision Enterprises, (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dixon-Precision-Enterprises-LLC/101871974702487). The spindle, spring, nut and washer are available at
P2 Marine

Select carefully. Ours uses the 8mm threaded stud, and NOT the 9mm pressfit with locking key. They have the parts bundled, absent the pressure finger.
As for not needing the finger for chain only; The chain on the locker-side of the gypsy is not heavy enough to reliably

prevent the bunching of chain at the strip point. You can get a nasty knot that will prevent retrieval. The pressure finger on the chain prevents such a mess. gain, the kit from P2 does NOT have the finger. It comes from Dixon.

Hi Guys, Ron here again. I today received the newly manufactured long pressure finger (8mm post) from Dixon Precision Enterprises, LLC. (Michael Dixon 770-789-7411 DixonPrecision@Gmail.com)
It is really too nice to use. I think I shall put it in a display case.

Hello Ron,

Now that some time has passed, wondering how your finger repair has worked out. I have replaced the spring & finger years ago and now have the replacement motor coming Weds. as the old one ia a pile of rust.
