I ordered new transmission coolers for my 2005 8.1 Horizon S inboards. Serial Numbers are: OM 397283 and OM 397284. Transmissions are Hurth 63 IV V-drives, also known of as 630's. The part number from any web site is: 63832T or 863832T or add 01 after the "T". I ordered two. I went to install them today, and they are about 1.5 - 2" shorter than mine, and the oil line fittings are slightly smaller than mine.

I don't know the fitting sizes, but I do know this: The fittings on the transmission side is the same size as the fittings on the coolers that I ordered. These fitting require an 11/16" wrench to tighten/loosen. The fitting on my coolers require a 3/4" wrench to actuate.

So, I did a little hunting on line. If I choose the oldest block of 8.1 Horizon S's instead of my series, I find part number 862837T (second part number, for the purposes of this thread). This particular cooler is slightly longer than the one I ordered, like the ones in my boat. All other series of 8.1's use my same part number (the one I ordered, anyway).

Any experts know if the second part number (-37T) uses a slightly larger fitting than the first (32T)? Additionally, the ones I ordered have a threaded plug near one end and mine do not. Does anyone know if the second part number has such a plug? I know it's probably for a sensor, but my boat does not use them.

Frank W - Do you know if either of these is better than the other for avoiding failure?

Anyone with a 2005 340, does your boat have a threaded plug near one end of the trans oil coolers?
Can you tell if the oil line fittings at the cooler use a 3/4" or 11/16" wrench?
(The coolers are black tubes about 2" X 16" that sit on the front (actually back, but face the bow) end of the engine, on top, with a water hose attached to each end and a pair of oil lines that run to each respective transmission. They run port-stbd, not front-to-back.) I would really appreciate help on this one.

My boat may have had new (old?) coolers already installed. I suppose I could get new lines to go with my new coolers, but I want to make sure to get the right stuff. The coolers I have are longer, and will therefore provide better heat exchange.

Any 8.1 Horizon S Owner:

Would you please see what size wrench fits over the transmission oil line fitting leading to/from your transmission oil cooler (at the cooler)? It should be an 11/16, or a 3/4. Either way, could you post your result with your boat type, year, and/or approx engine serial number (can leave off last few digits).

Thanks in advance! I'm trying to figure out what to do to replace mine. Maybe I should go with the designated part and just change the lines out too.

I think I have this figured out. The previous owner had the transmission coolers replaced. He used the outdated part number described above. He used outdated (but new) hoses to make the match. I probably don't need to replace mine yet. They looked really good (see previous thread, same topic). I need to try to find out when he replaced them.

John,

I can't offer help, just share your frustration. I recently had a mechanic order and install coolers as part of my regular annual service. I am the second owner, and the boat is about 8 1/2 years old. So I am doing it as a precaution. For my block numbers, he ordered the 862837T part number. At the boat, we noticed that they were about 2 inches longer than the ones on the boat. The end of the boxes for the new ones were marked with "rev D". The oil fittings were farther apart, but he was able to rotate the fittings on the transmission to make the hoses reach without any strain. He did comment that the bigger cooler was better for cooling, but he would never go smaller.

RonF,

If you get a chance, put a wrench on the fitting nearest the cooler (either, or both). See if the fitting requires an 11/16" wrench or a 3/4".

I'm trying to figure this thing out.

Thanks for the reply.

Just a "lack of progress" report. I did not get over to the boat this weekend. Will post wrench size results when available.

Thanks. The response I got from Merc was that the part number is the correct part for the boat (the new part number).

That is, of course, if adding the -01 on the end doesn't change anything.

Anyone know if 863832T and 863832T-01 are the same part?

Anyone know if 863832T and 863832T-01 are the same part? Transmission oil coolers for Mercs.

John,
Might be a dumb question, but why do you need to replace the transmission coolers after only 2 years? Is this a normal maintenance thing?

Thanks, & Merry X-Mas.

Thanks Frank. I'm just about ready to do the 200 hr service, and will check it out.

Besides, my boat was splashed 30 Aug '04 - almost 3.5 years ago. The ironic part is that the coolers and 100% of potential damage from them is covered by my extended Merc warranty. The aluminum exhaust manifolds, technically, are not. Wish me luck on those.

Hampton (John),

I put the 3/4 inch wrench on the oil fittings and it was an exact fit. As I said in an earlier post, these coolers are longer than the ones on the boat.

Thanks. I suspect that those are the ones I have on my boat. The question is, were these original equipment, or have they already been replaced? Like I mentioned earlier, I now know that this is covered under warranty, but I'd like to prevent problems.
