Ok, after thinking that my youngest son, 19 asked to join the NAVY ? I was thinking maybe I should do something for the young veterans that have come home already!? I have already offered to support another member here in his effort to support them ,but I want to do my own thing,

If anyone here on the eastcoast has been involved with a project like this ,and is willing to pitch in either with advice or money I'd appreciate it!!!!

If I could take a veteran's family out After Memorial Day , even for the day I know that would make my family very happy . I have no idea how to get this off the ground so any thoughts, good or bad (if any) are welcome!!!!

although, I was not born on this soil! (Naturalizered!) My children where!!! And I will support my son with or without outside support!!!!! I am damn proud of this country and will support it the best way I know!!!

i have no idea what I'm in for here but willing to give all! To this cause!!! If not for the men and women of our armed forces ? We would not be boating!!! Freely!!!!

Pm me if you'd like!!

I am ex army, 9 years. Never served in a conflict, was on standby for the United Nations support to Namimba, South Africa. Advance Party.

My brother served in Vietnam.

My wife's father served in WW11 in Papua Nuigunea. She is a Psychologist and has a contract to support Vets.

That's my history in this, I do have more family ties in current conflicts.

Anyway during our Christmas Holidays we spent a week in Las Vegas at New Year. We took a flight over the Grand Canyon, the airport from this from memory is Boulder City.

A home caught our eye on the way there, flags flying etc, stood out as a Vets home/hospital/retirement village

In the Airport there were several Thank you/support letters to the aircraft operators for supporting the Vet's home. But more importantly news articles. It is where they specialise in replacing limbs. Quite a lot of medical advancements have been made there.

My two cents worth

When my daughter wakes up I will ask her how the project was started over at her stables. Dream Catchers had a day for W.W. To come in and ride. Maybe she can point you in a correct direction. You may also want to look into a group called Got Your Six. When you get it to the sponsor stage, I would love to help

Re: project

Joe, We tried it a few years ago at the marina.... Not one Wounded Warrior showed up. :smt089

I was thinking small, say invite a family so I won't be dissapointed if it wasnt a huge crowd. Plus this give the veteran more personal attention. I contacted the WWP (wounded warrior project) but since its the weekend I guess they'll get back to me .

Gotta start somewhere.

As some of you may know, GW and I donate several dinner cruises each year to organizations to be auctioned off at their fund raising events. These organizations include Junior Achievement, Tri-Cities Cancer Center and an organization that helps find homes for stray animals. We're also probably going to be doing them for Camp Patriot http://www.camppatriot.org/.

These dinner cruises have raised between $350-1,400 per cruise for the organizations we have donated them to, and we feel it's a great way of giving back to the community we live in.

Last year I contacted Wounded Warriors on three separate occasions, speaking with three different people, and explained to each that we'd like to sponsor some day trips for wounded soldiers that would include lunch, snacks, pop, and dinner. I even arranged with a local hotel to provide free lodging for vets coming from out of town.

Wounded Warriors, for whatever reason, would not get involved. It seemed that once they learned it would not involve fund raising for WWP, they didn't want to have anything to do with us. I may be wrong about my perception, and I certainly don't want to say anything bad about that organization, but they didn't want to even provide us with the name of a local contact who we could set these up through.

Interesting

That's too bad . I'm hoping for a better response ill keep updating "if" I hear back from them

Last fall in Washigton we stayed beside a 60+ foot cruiser. The owner was involved with the WW program. He takes out vets fishing over night. They go off the coast out of site of land. He sets up a watch system at night so they do not have to come back to the marina. Think he takes out 6 at a time. No idea how he got involved but he seems to have being going out 3 times a year.
He has taken out PTSD and injuered vets. Some of the PTSD vets have dogs with them.
Seemed like a good program.

Well today I did get a favorable response from WWP. They gave me an event application to fill out and send back. The email did ask if I was making a donation, so I'll fill it out and see if they respond after that .

So let me see if I have this right....you offer your six figure boat at your expense which is greater than $100 per hour to operate, plus your time and your taking full responsibility for any damage to your boat that may occur due to the physical condition of the warrior and the apparatus they may require to attempt to make them whole.....and WWP asks if you are making a donation!

Is it just me or is any else having a WTF moment right now?

David,
It might just be a standard response form. They don't know if they don't ask. I'm curious how they will proceed from here.

A long time ago I was on a trip to the sothern US I was sitting in a bar at an airport and there was a soldier sitting alone I paid his bar bill. Perhaps that was a start. If we all do a bit perhaps they will feel we apreciate what they have done regargless what country they are from.

Yup, that's the same for I filled out three times and all three times I put zeros in the donation amount question. I wish my experience with them had been more positive, but it is what it is.

I try to do that whenever I can. We don't have many troops in uniform here, but I've filled their gas tanks on my card, paid for their lunch, etc. A small price to pay for what they are doing so we can enjoy our lifestyles.

Thankful GFC

Wounded Warriors is great program and has done alot of good for our veterans. But, it is a big business and ran like one. My company sponsors the Ride to Recovery project to support injured veterans. The money that is raised from the events (bike rides) goes for bikes/trikes for our veterans to help with their rehabilitation. You might have saw it discussed on '60 Minutes' a couple weeks ago. The 3 gentlemen seated in the first 2 pics were our guests of honor last year--each a Pearl Harbor survivor. I know many of you are bike riders...great event to be a part of. I also have a group of former special forces guys who are part of a program that takes veterans fishing...aptly called "Reel Men Fishing". its also a not-for-profit program worth supporting. http://www.reelmenfishingteam.org/

Bottomline, no matter what it is you choose to do to support a veteran, the important thing is to do something. It's the least we can do. Boat rides are a great idea...good luck with it.
