Fellow classics, my 454 falls on its face at higher rpms. Running quadrajet carb. Cleaned, new cap wires plugs etc. timing set at 8*.
im scratching my head as to what it could be.
any pointers.
fires up quick idles and runs great. So i dont know.
thank you!

Welcome aboard...

What is your tach saying????
is it reving up and problem with outdrive?

or you can be starving for fuel?

Welcome. At what RPM is it falling off?

Not enough info. What is it doing exactly. It could be anything from a spun hub to a clogged fuel filter in the carb itself.

The Q-Jet should be fine all the way to redline, suspect your fuel delivery is bad or restricted. Test with a remote tank hooked directly to the fuel/water sep inlet. Report resuts

Welcome aboard...
Tach reads good then just kind of bounces, yes like not enough fuel or to much.. Out drive seems perfect. Previous owner replaced it two years ago and then boat sat

Sry my phones being difficult

Do you get snapping and popping? Does it transition into the secondary? If it's not the fuel supply, try a new coil. Also is it EI or points? If points check the run out in the distributor.

Do you check the filter at the Carb, it should be were the fuel line enters the carb?. Also when was the last time the carb was removed and cleaned? It sounds as if you are starving her for fuel at the high end, which would point to a clogged needle valve.

again at what rpm is she dropping off? How old is the fuel and is the fuel treated or a marine grade fuel? She might just need a good tuneup.

Wardy,

Did this just start happening out of the blue?
Did you just buy the boat?
