Imagine finding one of these under the Christmas tree? A record number of background checks for gun purchases were performed over the Black Friday weekend, the FBI says.

By Martha C. White
Americans spent some $52 billion on Black Friday weekend. In addition to sweaters and iPods, though, shoppers were scooping up something else in large numbers: guns.
According to the FBI, which processes requests for background checks of prospective gun buyers, 129,166 such checks were performed on Black Friday, Nov. 25, breaking the previous single-day record -- set on Black Friday 2008 -- by nearly a third. The surge in gun sales was initially reported by USA Today.
Analysts who focus on firearms say this increase is part of a years-long trend toward increasing gun ownership. In a recent Gallup poll, 47 percent of respondents said there was a gun in the household, up from 41 percent just one year ago.
More people are buying guns these days, particularly handguns, said Cai von Rumohr, managing director at investment company Cowen & Co. For all of November, the number of background checks processed by the FBI rose by around 16 percent vs. year-ago levels.
"These numbers have been relatively strong, and I think more of it has been the trend towards lower-priced, smaller weapons," von Rumohr said. For the most part, it's unlikely these weapons are being bought to wrap up and put under a Christmas tree; many states have laws that prohibit buying a gun for someone else.
The number of first-time buyers and women buying guns has been on the rise for a few years, which may have contributed to the high numbers on Black Friday. Data from the National Sporting Goods Association show an increase in the number of female gun consumers, including a nine percentage point jump from last year to this year. Also, every state except for Illinois now lets residents carry concealed weapons.
"Retailers tell us 25 percent of customers are first-time buyers," said Larry Keane, vice president and general counsel at the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a firearms industry trade association. Many gun dealers that enroll firearm novices in safety and training courses report that their classes are full or wait-listed, another indication of growth in the number of new gun owners, he said.
Caroline Brewer, director of communications at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, called the Black Friday surge a "one-time event." She said any increase in gun purchases "may be the result of marketing."
If marketing is the cause, it appears to be successful.
"Whereas five years ago it was politically incorrect (to own guns), ... what seems to be changing is social acceptance," said Bret Jordan, analyst at investment firm Avondale Partners. "I think there might be a changing view of firearms."
Jordan said the industry saw a surge in gun purchases around the time of the last presidential election, apparently because hunters and other enthusiasts feared President Barack Obama would push for more gun-control laws or stronger restrictions.
"When Obama was elected, I think people rushed out and stocked up on their tactical rifles," Jordan said, referring to military-style weapons that were potential targets of legislative restrictions.
More recently, though, the focus has switched to handguns. In spite of the economic downturn, "The category of firearm that has continued to sell very well is something one would have if they were concerned about their personal safety," Jordan said.
"The general trend is it's more socially acceptable to own a gun in the United States than it was five to six years ago," he said.

Smith&Wesson 686 w/Silver Tip Hollow points for the "TEA PARTY" folks!!!!! LMAO:grin:
C'mon Lance. That's not cool. Your Wall Street squatters scared me way more than a bunch of folks that want the spending to stop.

You guys are scaring me. Several kids on Long Island shot themselves playing with their parents gun over the years. It upset me to the point I never considered getting one with little kids in the house. After reading this thread I think I need a FEW guns with the impending violence that may be coming. I don't want to bring a knife to a gunfight!!

Sig P229 Ellite SS .40 ....Almost always on me.

Thanks Donnie!!!! But I don't carry a firearm, except on a overnight on da boat or road trip on the harley. Other than that it stays beside the bed. I learned how to use it long before I was a union member, but hey thanks for the love!!

Here's an interesting side bar. After the Japanese decimated our
fleet in Pearl Harbor Dec 7, 1941, they could have sent their troop
ships and carriers directly to California to finish what they started.

The prediction from our Chief of Staff was we would not be able to
stop a massive invasion until they reached the River. Remember, we
had a 2 million man army and war ships....all fighting the Germans.
So, why did they not invade?

After the war, the remaining Japanese generals and admirals were
asked that question. Their answer....they knew that almost every
home had guns and the Americans knew how to use them.
The world's largest army... America's hunters!
I had never thought about this....
A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of
states and arrived at a striking conclusion:
There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin.

Over the last several months, Wisconsin's hunters became the eighth
largest army in the world.
More men under arms than in Iran.
More than in France and Germany combined.
These men deployed to the woods of a single American state to hunt
with firearms, and no one was killed.
That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods
of Pennsylvania and Michigan's 700,000 hunters, all of whom have now
returned home safely.
Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia and it literally
establishes the fact that the hunters of those four states alone
would comprise the largest army in the world. The point?
America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of
home-grown firepower.
Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of
national security.

looks like an email my dad sends out! :smt024

I'm pretty sure the US wasn't "officially" in World War II until after Pearl Harbor. That was one of big issues of the times. Some wanted the US involved in the European theater but the President choose not to. US provided financial and military supplies but not soldiers. Germany and Italy declared war on the US shortly after Pearl Harbor.

I'm also not sure that reason was ever stated by the Japanese. They had a lot of their soldiers deployed throughout the south pacific and likely not enough to invade the US.

my 2 cents

Bugging out to the boat may be a good idea.....you can see them coming!....Mike.

Sweeping gun control measures will be attempted in Obummers second term. There have been numerous reports of this from multiple sources. America has armed itself for this possible event in recent years. Stockpiles of ammo and arms are common these days in average households due to unrest here and in the world not to mention rising prices. The UN also needs to be removed from US soil because they no longer benefit us.....they benefit everyone else. It's time for the Fed to get out of our lives/banking & business and stop feeding the entitlement pool and growing it, Mike.

That's a name I haven't heard in awhile. I went through Mas' LFI in the early 80's. We became friends and he stayed with us when he came back a couple of years later for the second course. Nice guy. And not a bad shot!

He's on tv Sportman's Channel I think. Does a short lesson on "Personal Defense TV". Still writes for some of the gun mags. And still holds courses of various types.

I use to read quite a few of his articles. I always thought his tactics and talent were spot on. I believe he worked for a small police Dept in NH and some criticized him about that but who ever said you have to work for a big department to be skilled. Just being aware of what's going on around you is very important....like knowing when to move on or out of a situation, Mike.

Mas maintained a position with the Grantham, NH police dept where he is a Captain. I think the reason he stays on as a cop is that it affords him the ability to carry a CWP in many of the surrounding states that he might otherwise not be able to.

I haven't read any gun mags in many years because I'm not actively involved in shooting any longer. I still am a Life Member of the NRA but other than that affiliation and attending a few gun shows a year, I don't do much with guns any more. After a 15 year career in law enforcement including firearms instructor, competition shooter, armorer, etc., I've gotten involved with other sports.....like boating!

My wife found out boating is much more expensive but she likes it more! Good for you and enjoy!.....Mike.
