Is it unreasonable to request MarineMax move a used boat from one location to another? It’s a company owned boat, not brokered. Just want to know before I walk in their Monday morning and request that they bring this boat to me to look at instead. I’m positive that I would purchase the boat as long as it goes through the surveys and sea trials, and I’m willing to put a deposit for this. When I mentioned this to the sales person, he didn’t seem comfortable with that request.

Without a purchase contract and a deposit I would think unreasonable. Even with a contract, I would be surprised.

Can you drive to the location?

I'd say that's unreasonable. Normal for purchaser to look at boat where ever it is and travel to from on their own dime. You could make delivery a part of an offer/contract, and I would suspect that they would not do that. The issue is who owns the boat and therefore whos insuring the boat in transit.

It is all in the approach you take.......without a sold contract, don't expect anything but if you make a reasonable offer that the manager of the store that own s the boat will accept, give them a 10% deposit subject to your personal inspection , a sea trial acceptable to you, a hull survey and a mechanical survey, and move the boat to your location. You have several get out of jail free cards that should allow you to walk from the deal if you don't like the boat. Expect them to counter with you paying for moving the boat back if you refuse it.

Time is on your side....the year is ending and MM likes to take losses so that they can decide what year to put them in. Get everything in writing in a well written purchase agreement.

What size boat? How far away from you is it? I just went through trying to get a boat shipped. Right now with boat sales high and shippers being a month out plus even if they agreed you wouldn't see the boat for a while. I ended up buying a 18k trailer and picked it up myself. Brokers and transporters said it would be late january before they could get to it. By then it would have been frozen in the slip or stored till spring.

I would say no dice unless and until you buy the boat and maybe make it a throw in as part of the purchase. Why would would they spend the time and money otherwise?

As Blueone said, 17 minutes after I put the deposit on the boat there was a second deposit on the boat.

I am buying a 2014 410 from Marine max in Boston right now, We went back and forth for two days with the deal I got them down as far as they would go.
All upper management keep saying is we have to close in three week with the deal, I have until the 12/18/20 or the deal is off but in return I got them to winterize, shrink wrap and store the boat at there cost.
In the spring I have to have the boat out of there by March 31 But they have to have all services, recalls, oil changes, filters Etc. up to date on the motors, Generator and pods, They have to have the boat in fully working order ( Everything must work ) completely detailed the boat inside and out.
The boat will have a full tank of diesel, Coast Guard package, Go boating kit ( Don't know what this is ) and continuing Training ( Don't need this ? )
As fwebster said be careful and have everything in the contract, They had to rewrite the contract four times as they did not specify what they were doing in the spring, Leaving out all the expensive work.
I am doing all surveys this coming Saturday which I am not worried about as this is a Marine Max certified boat that Marine Max had all surveys already done.
After the surveys on Saturday they will Winterize the boat.
The boat is 4 hours away so it looks like I will traveling over the winter so I don't have the shakes as it is not easy being boatless.
I am looking forward to the shakedown run from Boston to Long Island, Already plaining the trip

A flight and a rental car is cheap when compared to the cost of the boat. Go see it.

Don’t take for granted that the boat is certified and that they already had the surveys done. My friend bought a 2017 510 Fly from Marine max down in FL and the surveys where all done by MM so he though he was set. The boat was a year old with 70ish hrs on it. Once the boat was bought early winter of 2019 he found out it had a bent rudder, leaking windshield and a bunch of voids in the hull among other smaller issues. He lost almost the whole summer of 2019 trying to get MM to step up and make the repairs. They did in the end but he didn’t get much boating in that year. Getting it all in writing was a great idea because once the closing happens promises get forgotten really quick.

I would note that Marine Max is on a fiscal year that ends in September. It is the quarter end now so they want it gone, but it’s not the same urgency as at the end of their fiscal year. I benefited greatly from buying a Sea Ray in August when they wanted it off their books by fiscal year end.

I am definitely doing all my own surveys as stated above.

If you are talking with Larry Russo, or his son, you can count on what you’re being told to be true. We bought our Sea Ray from them before they became MarineMax and never had any issues. I don’t know of anyone who has dealt with them who has bad words for them personally, or the dealership.

Agreed, they were great. It is too bad all these independent dealers sold out to MM. I don’t blame them as the deals were too good to refuse but it leaves us consumers with not many good dealer options

I went through this with MarineMax 4 years ago on a boat they took in on a trade.
When I made the initial offer subject to survey on the boat, they agreed to have the boat moved to the dealership closest to me when I closed in December and that location would winterize, wrap, prep (all at their expense) and deliver to me locally in April.
Then I had the survey done and a few things came up.
My position was that I would honor my original offer if they addressed the few things that the surveyor pointed out.
After some back and forth they agreed to do it, but only if I agreed to let them winterize, store, prep (all at their expense) and deliver to me in April.
They explained that involving another MarineMax location cuts in to their commission, plus the cost of a Captain to run the boat from one place to the other.
It made sense and seemed fair to me so I agreed.
Took delivery in April and ran it myself for the 6 hour trip home as opposed to just picking it up less than a mile from my dock.
No regrets at all!
The boat spent the winter a 2 1/2 hour drive from me, but the trips I made up there over the few months to fiddle around were an adventure and the guys at the MarineMax store were really great every time I went to visit my new to me boat.

As Jeremygavin said be careful with Marine Max certified boat as we did the viewing of this boat yesterday and was only on the boat 10 minutes as The first thing I did was open the day hatch and I see at least 1 foot of water with diesel fuel floating on the water in the bilge with rust marks all over, I then look around the cockpit quick, then head into the cabin to see a 3' x 3' moldy stain on the ceiling with water stains on the kitchen wall, I ask the broker why was the not showing to me when I did the virtual.
I look at the broker and said I just drove 4 hours to be on this f$$$in Marine Max certified boat for 10 minutes, I was so pisssed off as I specified to him that The boat I just sold was immaculate and sold in 2 hours and wanted to replace it with the same quality, So you know I was not going to like this boat.
I want to throw him in the water.

That is so unethical and stupid. I don't understand what these people are thinking. There is NO DOUBT they knew the issues of this boat, hell, it's their business and they think someone else isn't going to notice??? Sleazy!

Has happened to me twice. Once to look at a boat in Jupiter FL that according to the dealer was 'maintained with an open checkbook'. Right. I knew before stepping off the dock it was junk and that I wasted a trip from Dallas. Another time I traveled to Montreal Canada to inspect a car that I had a contract on. I knew that moment the cover came off that I'd been lied to. There went a weekend and $1500.

I wish there was a way to really call out these BS artists.

Not a MM issue, just boats in general. If I am going to make an offer, put a deposit down, and go through the expense of Survey, sea trial, etc. I want to see the boat in person. Or someone who I really trust knows what they are looking at take a look at it.
