I was sitting in the cockpit last weekend and watch the 50' sailboat next to me come into his slip. He was doing a lot of shifting, for & rev, for & rev. He looked good on his first try, should have kept going, but he didn't and got more and more out of control.
At one point a woman was able to leap to the dock, standing with her arms out ready to catch but the guy on the boat holding the line didn't throw it to her. Now the sailboat stern is getting near hitting me. The sail boat captain was starting to freak, one hand on his manbun 'OH MY GOD', but he hit forward again, moved away from my boat and ran into the dock pedestal, laid it out flat on the dock.
At this point I went over to help because Captain Manbun ain't done shifting. I holler to the sailor on the boat, 'throw her the line' and he did...and then he threw her another one. She is now standing on the dock, one line in each hand and doesn't know what to do with them. She's bent forward at the waist trying to pull, there is a little wind that's stronger and she's going to be pulled in.
There's another fella on the bow, I holler to him to throw me that line. It snagged on his fanny pack thingy but enough was launched for me to grab. As luck had it the Captain was going into reverse again as I got the bow line on a cleat. The boat moved aside the dock nicely and a sailor leapt off the boat to give the woman some help.
They all gathered on the dock near the poor pedestal. They were all smiles, some hugs, and congratulating each other on another awesome adventure.
They explained to me that they've never owned a boat, they just rent them, they're from 'The Cities' ya' know. They just love coming up to Lake Superior to sail.
