I am having questions about wiring the Garmin chartplotter to the power on the 2006 280DA. I got the plotter physically mounted using a RAM mount, and jury rigged the power supply to work off the 12 volt cigarette lighter accessorie plug at the helm. After that, I am stumped by my boat’s wiring.

The wiring chart shows an unused red/violet wire from the forward EIM(electronic interface module). It shows “coil and terminate” on the chart, with an arrow. I took the plastic ties off the wiring harness that is tied to the steering rack, but that wire is nowhere to be found.

Interestingly, the accessory plug itself has two red and two black wires wired to it. One set appears appropriate (labeled as access plug), and the other set is labeled galley accessory plug (if I remember correctly). This is NOT as is shown on the schematic, and in my opinion appears to be a mistake. (or it could be an option that keeps the wires out where you can see them)

I’m away from the boat now, but I’m thinking that when I’m next attempting this, I’ll clip off (from the accessory plug) the galley red and black wires, double check to see if I’ve disabled anything, and just use those.

It is a mystery to me what some of this stuff is, and as far as I can see it is not shown on the schematic. Also, I have these nice switches at the helm that say accessories(forward and aft) and on the starboard switchboard side accessories 1 & 2. No clue what these switches switch on and off. The company that makes the EIM has a website and shows an interface board that appears under the helm with 3 unused sockets on it, but no instructions about how to use them. See link for the picture. Each plug has four electrical connections to it.

Anyone have any insights on this and on my planned scheme to get power from the galley 12volt wires?

The accessory wires are there, they are bundled with the main harness. You may need to take the starboard panel down in the aft berth to get access to them.

If you want to avoid dismantling, you can also do what I did. I wired a buss to the input + / - on the forward end of the EIM, and placed the buss bar under the helm against the starboard side. I ran the GPS power to this buss with an inline fuse. I also tapped into the switch for the depth gauge and attached the power inputs for the GPS antenna and depth transducer to that and ran the (-) to the buss bar. My VHF is also attached to the buss bar as well. In fact the VHF had been installed directly to the input +/- of the EIM.
