For those of you curious enough (or bored enough), here's a very simplified explanation of what a MAC address is.

A MAC address is a unique identifier assigned to a network card or network port by its manufacturer. It looks like this: 08:0A:69:12:01:FC. In theory there should never be two network ports with the same MAC address. The equivalent of a MAC address in the boating world would be the Hull ID of a boat.

The MAC address is used to obtain an IP address for your network connection. Computers, servers, and routers use IP addresses (mostly) and MAC addresses to route data to the right places on the Internet and other networks.

Server administrators can block computers from accessing their server by blocking any traffic coming from a particular IP address or MAC address. Somehow, the MAC address of Wesley's router was blocked from accessing CSR. We changed it and he was able to access CSR again. He had been using another router prior to yesterday which was not blocked.

Hope that helps.

More in depth explanations are available, but normal hourly consulting fees will apply .
