I am planning on installing a wireless network on Aftica. Any suggestions or things I should look for? I would like it to be compact and it will be installed safely in the cabin. Thanks guys and girls....

For good measure here's a photo

Just pick up a wireless mobile hotspot. I have an ATT & a Verizon hotspot that I use for work and we just take one of them to the boat when we are out. They will network several computers together too.

Hey CJ...

The idea is to be able to integrate some of my electronics on a wireless network so I can control them remotely. I have a Verizon mobile hot spot plus my phone is also a hot spot. I just want to be able to play music and control my stereo with my laptop or even my cell phone. To do so I need a good wireless router and thought I'd see if there were any suggestions.

It all depends how technical you are :) and what other systems you have.

I would look for a router with "WAN via Wifi, with fall-over and/or bundling to 3G/4G networks" - then you can connect to Harbour Wifi when Available - and then use 3G when when no other Wifi is available.

If you are very technical - then look at Mikrotik routers. They can be configured in the most crazy setups - and a very cheap. But it requires a big driving license to get them programmed.

If not - I think DrayTek has some with 3G fall-over - or DLink.

I'm looking myself for my new boat - but boat wont be here for the next 6 weeks so it is not the top of my priority list. :)

I'm sorry, I never even considered using a network for that. I'm a Linksys (Cisco) guy when it comes to routers. I have tried D-Link with pretty good luck but Netgear or any of the off brands are always a pain in the butt.

I'm using an Amped Wireless (http://www.ampedwireless.com/) "Smart Repeater". It enables me to connect to my hot spot or to shore wireless networks for internet while I still have a discrete network internal to the boat for the same purposes you are considering. It provides ethernet ports so I can wire up a few devices and any device/user only needs to be configured to one network. I do have to change out the wireless connection of the repeater when changing locations, say from the marina wireless to my hot spot. A more elegant solution I have not felt the need to install as yet is a fail-over router as mentioned earlier; CradlePoint is another maker of those.
