wireless at the marina

Me too! I'm just 2 slips away from the router & got the p/w from the marina owner. How lucky can ya get?
 
Yep same here my slip is 15ft from the marina owner kitchen widows. :grin:.
I make faces at him and do other dumb stuff while he eats breakfast. :smt043
We get free Wifi at the marina. :smt038
 
I suggested to our marina owner that they ditch the cable TV (analog, which they can't seem to get a clear signal on) and put in wireless. So far, no luck.
 
Jeff, I heard threw the grapevine. :smt101. That it only cost $500 bucks or less to set WiFi up ??. :huh:
 
We have WiFI at our dock for a fee. I just teather my droid to my laptop and get a 3G connection that I pay for anyway.

I use it will at the dock or away with same connection speeds. Maybe not as fast as some WiFi, but good enough and no extra fees wherever I go.

It would depend on required coverage, and how much sophistication you are looking for (username sign-in, pay-per-use, etc). Anything that can be served by one hot spot with simple security (shared key or password - or heaven forbid none) could be done for less than $100. Most marinas are going to need more than one radio though, so that will get a little more complicated and expensive.

But all I care about is coverage at my slip - so $100 should do it!

How is that done? I have the "Dare" but I am planning an upgrade to the "DroidX". That would be awesome if it gave me computer access too!!! My wife has drawn a line in the sand regarding a 3G card for the Laptop :smt009.

With the Droid X you can set up your own "hot spot". To which you can connect up to 5 devices. I have not done it yet but reading how seems pretty straight forward. I have connected to my home & office wireless networks. Its as simple as pie.

We bought a card (& the overpriced plan) :smt089before I got the X.
 
Free WiFi is becoming pretty common in northern lake michigan. We have a signal at our dock at home which is about 80 feet from a router in our living room.
 
very nice for you and your marina.
we have it a bull frog on lake powell but our slip is not in range of antenna so.....


would be nice to have dependable connection as you have
 
Im pretty sure my whole marina is covered. I have one of the further out slips all the way on the outisde and I get a fairly good connection except I have to be in the cockpit area it will not follow me into the cabin. Nothing like taking a half day on friday and sending in the weekly report without anyone being the wiser ; )
