Winterizing Rules for Ethanol

I always have filled the tanks almost full and stabilized the fuel, our marinas leave old fuel in their tanks all winter and I am concerned in the spring that I will get bad fuel if I leave the tanks empty and then fill up.

I imagine it is a bigger dilemma for the bigger boats that are at the mercy of the marinas for fuel you never know how old their fuel is especially at the smaller ones. Like the article there is a big difference between warmer and colder areas on how fast the gas breaks down.

I think I'm going to empty the tank completely this year.

My tank has a 3/4" threaded plug in the top. I think I can push a piece of rubber 1/2" fuel line into it. If I can, I'm going to run it until she's nearly empty on my last run. After I winterize her, I'm going to use an old Holley blue pump I have to transfer the last couple of gallons into my 14 gallon gas caddy. If there is no ethanol in the tank, then there shouldn't be any water in it come spring.

Just don't blow yourself up in the process. You may want to just put some fuel additive in whatever is left in the tank(s) after you run out of gas and Sea Tow gets you back to the marina.

I store tanks full and use Stabil. Always runs great next spring. Have done this for years no issues!

Got this from Boating on line seems like the answers are all over the place.

man I saw this post and laughed because I read the same article and thought I would see where most agreed on one thing but instead it just made me scratch my head!! tank empty, tank half full, tank full, blah blah blah.....

I guess I'll just do what I always do - add some fuel and some stabil.

I guess we all agree with the article on not agreeing on what is right or wrong. If what ever you have been doing works keep doing it is what I get out of it since the “Professionals” don’t agree eather.
