Do I need to warm up the engine to open a thermostat to get antifreeze into the block?

Shame on you... you've been around here long enough to know that you're supposed to search the forum for questions like this! :smt001

Yes, you would have to run the engine until the t-stat opens to ensure that AF get's everywhere. But, here's the kicker... you would have to run it on AF only (the whole time) to be sure you're adequately protected. Before you do this, buy some stock shares in AF!

Instead, do this... start the engine and let it warm up for a few minutes (you've already got stabilizer in the gas tank, right?). Spray fogging fluid into the carb (heavily) until you "fog" the neighborhood with a nice cloud of white smoke. Shut her down immediately.

Next, drain the water using your quick drains. Hook them back up. Remove the 3 hoses that are on your t-stat housing. Pour about 2 gallons into the big hose until a nice pink color comes back out the t-stat housing and put it back on.

Grab the hose that goes towards your manifold and hold it as high as you can. Pour pink into it (about 1/2 gallon) until it fills up the hose. Give it a minute and do it again - then reattach hose.

Repeat the same procedure as above with the other hose.

You're done. This is about a 10 - 15 minute job, start to finish. Might take you a bit longer the first time, but it is actually quite easy. About 3 - 4 gallons is all you need.
