Winter project: Electronics upgrade on '05 320

I have had mine for a little more than two years and in some pretty big water with no signs of stress:thumbsup:
Maybe I have been lucky:huh:

I have the smaller Garmin HD closed array and an M-3 on it.

Russ,
While we're on the subject, looking at your setup I would think that radar and M3 should switch spots, meaning that radar should be on the very top so it doesn't have any obstruction. At least this is how I understand what the proper setup should be. Am I right or wrong?

Nope...

If the radar were mounted on the top mount, it could obstruct the sat antenna's view of the overhead sky (satellites). The radar only needs to "see" in a horizontal plane. As we said, the small obstruction of the mount mast aft is insignificant.

I see. I guess, this means that radar happens to be much greater obstraction for the satellite while it's more practical for the radar to see the targets around the mount for the sat. Thanks for clarification.

It's pretty cool that while we help one member we learn or at least clarify some things for ourselves .

Just to close out this thread, I purchased the following configuration from Boe:

Garmin 4208
Garmin GSD22 Sounder module
Garmin GXM51 XM Radio module (for XM Weather)
Garmin GMR18 HD RADAR 18" 4KW

Any recommendation on where to position all these dang appendages on the arch? I realize the Radar will be centered. Documentation states that the GPS and XM antennas should be 3' from the radar. I also have the Glomax frisbee up there.

Any advice would be appreciated before I start drilling holes.

Scott

Scott,

I would love to see pics of your set up once you get it installed. I am considering the exact same set up on our boat minus the XM module...

Also thanks to the person who posted their radar pics on the thread. I realize now that my Glowmex does not have that collar on it or its broken... AHHH another thing to fix...

Alegria,
You're welcome. What's the problem with your Glomex, are you getting no signal at all to any TV?

Can someone give me suggestions on how to get wires from the arch to the helm?

I spent about 2 hours at the boat today trying to fish the radar wires down the starboard side of the arch without luck.

I removed the tray/panel to the right of the helm and I removed the speaker that is on the arch. I also pulled out the 2 cup holders behind the helm seat.

I am hung up where the arch meets the gunwale (see picture). It is very difficult to see into this area. I can feel where the wires need to go, but I can't get them to fit. I need at least a .75 inch hole because of the large connectors on the wires.

There are a number of wires running through this area, and they seem to be tightly fitting through a hole. I am able to get a fish tape through, but the wires won't fit.

One question was whether removing the deck vent (see picture) would give me access? It looks like it has 4 screws that might release it.

Any help would be appreciated.

remove the side trim panel that is on the arch. The panel just pryea off, you will then have acess.

Are you talking about the moon-shaped vinyl padded trim piece? I circled the port-side one in the attached picture.

yes that's it. I pulls off. I mounted speakers in this peice. After removing you will see the the mounting bolts for the arch. I used a flat scrapper then a flat screw driverontop of that, so that the fiberglass dosen't get scratched. Pull/pry hard
