Winlass won't retrieve chain

I dropped the hook today for the first time ever. My winlass let out the chain and line just fine, however, when it was time to reel it in, the winlass reeled in the line but when the chain reached the winlass it wouldn't reel it in (the capstan would just spin). I had to help it by pulling the chain in while pressing the foot switch. I'm almost sure ther is something I needed to do that I wasn't doing. I can't imagine there is something wrong with the winlass, I bought the boat new and just never used the winlass.

Any suggestions?

Don't think you did anything wrong. When you "it just spun", was it as if it couldn't get a bite on the chain? Is this the chain that came with the boat from Sea Ray? Or was added - either by you or a dealer?

I believe it is the chain that came from Sea Ray. I saw the boat when Sea Ray delivered it to the dealer new in the shrink rap and the anchor and chain was in place.

I found the problem; the hub that pulls the chain was lose. I used the emergency handle from the locker to tighten the bolt in the hub, now it works just fine. Thanks for your help!

Good deal. Glad everything is working fine.

FYI: It is a windlass not a winlass... Don't ask me why, it just is... :)

That's what happens when I start start typing while I am falling asleep... Sorry I did fix it...

Now you have to write windlass on the black board 500 times...

Actually it's Windlass. and don't call me surely.

Makes me wonder though, the Detroit Lions wanted to play in the windless, so they built a dome. After playing in the dome, they became winless. Connection?

You know it always made me wonder as well, I hear everyone pronounce it as Windless as Wind meaning air or a breeze. But does it make more sense to be pronounced with Windless with Wind as in twist or wrap?
