Went up to my boat yesterday to check on it after all the snow we have had. By the looks of things the boats may not be going in until mid June, just kidding I wll be getting mine in the 3rd week in May. So now is the time to fix my Good windlass. I know you can send it to Good in NJ but I am just wondering about why it won't free drop the rode? It will pull it up nicely but to let it out you have to pull on it like a mad man. Being this is my 2nd year with the boat and I have what I think is 99% of the bugs worked out of it this is the one I can't figure out. It is a Good Windlass 500 series. Anyone have any idea what is wrong with it? Anyone have a book on this?
Thanks

First of all is you windlass a free drop? If it is it will have AFD (automatic free drop) stamped on it. If it does, there is a nylon bushing on the starbord side of the windlass. Remove the two allen screws from the housing and remove it. If the bushing does not move along the acme thread freely you need to replace the bushing. Very easy to do and you can order it from GOOD. This need to move freely because when you hit the down switch the bushing travels along the acme thread and dis engages the clutch dogs to let it free fall. Hope this helps

THANKS mrfl54. I think that could be it. I did have it apart last year and took off that piece that sticks out the side. There is a white plastic bushing on that. I guess when the weather gets a little better and I can get to the boat I will check it out again. Thanks for the info.
