I just purchased my 1997 280ss and cannot get my windlass to operate. When I hit the switch on the control panel or the foot switches on the bow all I get is a clicking sound. Is something seized up or is there a lock on it somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am also looking to change the oil and would like to know what kind to use(brand and weight) and what would be the best filters to use (twin merc. 5.0) as this boat did not come with any manuals.

The motor may need an overhaul. My windlass was loose and the motor had water in it. I had the motor rebuilt.

If you hear a clicking sound that that means that the low voltage side of the solenoid (sp) is working, so there is something wrong with the other side. Check the voltage on the high side and see if there is any. I you are getting voltage to the high side that would mean that that there is something worng between the solenoid and motor, if that circuit is ok make sure the ground from the windlass is ok. If all of that checks out ok there, is likely something wrong with the motor.

Go to SeaRay.com and see if you should be able to download the manuals. I am not surre about the engine manuals, but try Mercury's web site

First thing I would find out from Mercury is if your engine has flat tappet lifters or roller lifters. If flat tappet, you need to use an oil that has enough zinc in it. Most oil companies have removed the zinc because most new engines have roller lifters. If you use oil without enough zinc, you run the risk of cam lobes wearing. Something like 15W40 Shell Rotella would have enough zinc.
