Fellow Boaters,
My windlass finally went out after a long service life. I trouble shot and found out the motor is not functioning any more. The power to the windlass is good. I looked for a new motor on line and have not had any luck yet. I ordered a motor from Pyacht.com and they said it would take 3 weeks for the parts to come. It has been about that long and no parts yet.
Does anyone know where to get a replacement motor for this windlass? I am looking at the lewmar v700 windlass if I have to replace it, but would rather just replace the sprint 500 motor.
By the way, anchoring without a windlass actually has not been that bad. The free fall of just dropping an anchor is nice and having the wife move the boat while I take in the anchor rode is not bad either. It has not affected my boating. Thanks for any comments anyone has.

Update to above post... The windlass motor came in today. I shall install it tomorrow. More to come if it works.

Conclusion of Windlass Story... I pulled the motor and gear box off the windlass and kept the top unit on the boat (gypsy and tensioner). This is one job you want to take back home with you and do not attempt it while on the boat. I repacked all the bearings with marine grease, installed the new gasket and screwed the new motor onto the gear box. I also installed marine electrical connections onto the new motor leads. Then it was time to go back to the boat. When I got to the boat, I attached the motor and gear housing back to the top unit and fired up the windlass to test it out. Everything checked out. I also installed a new spring into the tensioner and the new spring was much stiffer than the old one. I went boating to test out the windlass and it worked flawlessly. I was happy to rebuild my windlass for $300 instead of buying a new one for $800. This is one job you need to be patient with. The parts for a Simpson Lawrence can be found at Pyacht.com, and it takes a month for the parts to come in. It was worth it not having to pay $500 more dollars and having to install a new windlass.
