Windlass advice?

About 4 or 5 years ago I replaced the original (non-functioning) Benson windlass on my 87 300 Sundancer with a Freefall type made by Powerwinch. It is capable of doing both rope and chain which I really like. But, the unit itself is a piece of junk.
I had a problem with it when it was less than a year old, called them up, and they referred me to a local authorized service guy for warranty work. I called the guy, explained the problem (a broken spring for the guide finger) and tried to make an appointment with him. The guy's schedule was pretty full and it would have been a couple of weeks before he could get to me so I called the company back, asked them to ship me the parts, and I fixed it myself. Anyway, during the conversation with the service guy (who seemed like a nice guy) he told me that he wouldn't put one of them on his worst enemy's boat because they are unreliable junk now that they were bought out by an RV company.
After a few years with this thing I tend to agree with him. It never Freefalls. I always need an assistant to hit the down button while I fool around with the anchor up on the bow getting it to release. I usually have to yank it loose.
When it comes time to retrieve it I always need an assistant to hit the up button in short 5 second bursts while I guide the anchor line. Anything past 5 seconds and the thing loses steam. I have to let it rest for 5 or 10 seconds and then retrieve a little more.
Note: that I use my engines to create slack and never strain the windlass by pulling the boat with it. Plus, once I'm anchored I take the strain off of the windlass by securing the anchor line to a cleat.
I think I've finally had enough and want to cut my losses. I want to be one of those guys who anchoring is a one man job for.
I want something that will handle rope and chain, freefall reliably if possible, and be able to retrieve without taking rests.
I was wondering what other Classic Sea Ray guys are using, and how it's working for them. I figure by now that most of the original Benson Windlasses have met their demise, especially since the company is long gone and parts are nearly impossible to find.

after alot of research I am going with a Lewmar 1000 free fall
but have no real world experience with it.

I still have my old Benson, so far I've only had to replace the rode and the spring. I got lucky on the spring, my dad turned me a new one in his gun shop. I would love a unit that would freefall and take chain, but until the motor goes I don't see sending the money

The Lewmar is what I wish I had gotten instead of the Powerwinch. I don't have any experience with them either though, that's why I figured I'd post here and see what brands/models guys have gone to and what their experience has been.
The only thing I know about the Lewmars is that the guy Powerwinch referred me to as a local service rep told me that had I gone to him when the Benson crapped out he would have advised me to get a Lewmar.
I was kind of impressed with the Good F850 Rope/Chain Windlasses when I looked at their stuff at the NY Boat Show this past year. It seems to really fit the bill, but the pricing on them is way above the Lewmars. I would have to really know that they are fantastic before I went for anywhere near that amount of money.
I'm thinking there might be other great brands/models out there that fit my needs that I don't know about.

When mine crapped out and I realized they were out of business and parts were impossible to find I took it as an opportunity to get something that would handle chain and rope. The bottom around here is very mucky/sandy and the chain really makes a big difference. I hat to say it, but since I went with the rope/chain combo on my fluke style anchor I haven't had any problems with dragging at all.
Spending the day or evening on the hook somewhere is just about my favorite thing about boating, so having a good reliable set-up is important to me.

The Good unit is absolutely first rate. I'd recommend it above all else, and their service is outstanding.

I'm glad JVM225 brought up this subject. I'm in the process of refinishing the teak on my old sea ray and I removed the spot light, bow cleat and skene bow chocks so I could buff and polish the area where the refinished teak will be reinstalled. While all this hard ware was removed, It occurred to me that it would be possible to install a bow pulpit. I would love to do this, but would need advise at to teak wood or starboard also what kind of windlass. I could remove the hatch to the anchor hold and have the pulpit cover that up. I wonder also because JVM225 was having to rest his windlass while raising the anchor if putting a battery in the anchor hold to minimize the length of wire to the windlass would be a good idea. I know it doesn't take much of a wire to run a charge from the back of the boat to the front. Has anyone added a pulpit to a boat that never had one? Sorry JVM225 don't mean to hijack your thread, but this seems like a good add to this post. I will be watching to see what others say about the brands of windlass also.

No problem!
Not sure where you would be able to mount a battery all the way up by the bow.
If you are good with wood then I would go for the teak. IMHO it looks really sharp. If not, then starboard is a good choice, but can be a bit pricey.

Why free fall? Why horizontal?

MM
Free fall wouldn't be absolutely necessary as I anchor in shallow water most of the time
but it's actually a vertical unit as I don't want to make anymore big holes in the pulpit area
should be able to mount it so I can use the hole where the hawes pipe is already to feed the rode into the locker

I also anchor in shallow water, but a free-fall windlass is mandatory for this area because winds and traffic. While you are sitting there holding the windlass switch down waiting for the anchor to hit the bottom, your boat can blow hundred + feet from where you want the anchor......you can also have 4 tourists in rental pontoon boats run in behind you and screw up your best laid anchoring plan.

Based on what I see in our marina......Sea Ray dealer, most of the 700 boats are Sea Rays with factory OEM windlasses.......the Good is the most trouble free windlass. They do require some maintenance, Good in NJ has a fast turn around service department. I take mine off every 5th or 6th winter and send it back for service and it is usually back in a week. It is 17 years old and works perfectly.....I can't even remember the last time I had to leave the helm to drop or pick up my anchor.

The anchor locker on my boat is huge and with a pulpit the anchor would not be in the locker. This would leave plenty of room for a battery and rode. I have all the wood working tools to build a wood pulpit. That may be a good winter project this coming fall.

the extra weight up there probably wouldn't hurt but if you start banging through waves ...batteries don't like vibration and impact.
I would also be concerned with chain crossing the terminals and shorting things out.
If I were to do that it would be a gel Optima or something like it
bouncing around might also compromise the floor of the locker since it really wasn't designed for that type of storage...and acid gasses could be an issue to your rode...sorry for the rambling but thinking as I type.

I have a 87 SR cuddy cabin and I removed my anchor locker and installed a Lemar Pro Fish windless vertical. I mounted my battery back at the stern near my engine on the opposite side of my other battery. On my SR I had a pvc that ran down the center of the boat just under the floor 23 ft. back. I used that to run my wire for the battery. I would recomend you to install your battery at the stern for safety and to access it. One thing you want to make sure is that you have at least 16" of air space from the top of your winch to the bottom of you locker. Otherwise your rode will not have enough room to fall freely and you will have a tangled mess. I had to cut the bottom of my anchor locker out to give me more vertical height, and then I installed a aluminum chute to handle the rode. I have a 20 ft chain attached to 100 ft rope. Also you can call Lemar up and they can give you the specs. for your boat. Here are some pics. I hope this helps.

Been trying to get through to them on the phone. All I get is a voicemail. Left a couple of messages, but no response yet.
