Will SOPA or PIPA Kill the internet Or CSR?

Did you actually read this? What year was this written? This law is 10 years old and this was only for digital recordings. Before that there was a law on cassettes and VHS tapes and the equipment that recorded them. This has been around since the 70's. You just didn't know it because we didn't have the internet. The world doesn't work that way anymore. There are no longer dedicated devices for recording.

I am unaware of this law being repealed or changed in substance of tariffs collected. I was adding to your previous post about the "tape" tariffs. If "the world doesn't work that way anymore" then we need to get the law changed so we as consumers do not have to pay the tariff on recording devices. MM

You know, that would probably work if people didn't steal. But they do, and they do it in countries that don't give a crap, and short of dropping a bomb on the country, we can't do anything about it.

Limit distribution to US IP addresses. It is a fact that low level sharing will happen and there is nothing that can stop it, nothing. The owners must develop distribution models that make it better to be legit. MM

This law was written in 1992 because that's when the consumer DAT machine came out. They wrote it in such a way that they thought it would include all future forms of digital audio recording. But digital recording can also be digital copying. Drag and drop a song onto your ipod... recorded. So the line has been completely destroyed. There no longer is a line.

Totally agreed, but they have to confine it to areas where they have jurisdiction. If you have US companies playing by the laws, charging Sharing fees, Then 50 websites in Nigeria with the same content for free, where do you think all the kids will go?

What people don't realize is that there will be lasting effects for the next 20 years because of this. Do you think it's a coincidence that we don't have a Beetles, or a Pink Floyd or a Led Zeppelin or our time? How many of our lives were changed and enlighten because when we were young, we would sit down in front of our stereo, put on the headphones and go into another world. In todays music economy, we would have been left with "Love Love Me Do" and then they would file for bankruptsy and go work at walmart or something. Today's kids have Justin Beiber and Lady Gaga to inspire them, How do you think they are going to grow up. In 10 or 20 years, will we look back and say "Damn, you remember when they used to make movies like Dr. Shivago, or Jurassic Park, or Harry Potter... Those were the good days of movies, they don't make them like that anymore". And if we don't fix it now, we will forever be stuck with Big Mama movies and Freddie Got Fingered movies.

Now this is so true and a sad state of affairs! It's mostly pop crap and not very memorable.

Turtle, Obviously you are more well versed on the subject than I, or probably most here on CSR. Your pasion is showing & I want to thank you for taking the time to post.

The facts & reasons you have stated for some form of control are indisputable. As I said, I am all for copyright protection. I also agree 100% that whatever safeguards are put in place must have teeth. Big teeth. I just dont think that our government is capable of providing said safeguards. Nor do I think they give a rats ass about protecting anything. Hence my comments about the slippery slope and any reference to a hidden agenda.

I feel certain that some tech company out there can develop and provide a solution. I am not smart enough to know what that is, but somewhere out there, the next Steve Jobs is working on it. I will just hope that the government stays out of the freakin way, and that nobody steals his work.

Thanks again for your posts.

I hope no one believes this will effect CSR. The problem is off shore sharing and China is STEALING american products! Not just music and videos, but reverse engineering everything we do! The idea a few years ago was let them have our factory job and we'll keep the engineering and design. Right? We'll design IPhones and china can make them. Right? Well, we've lost control of our intellectual products because while it's a world economy, we're not all playing by the same rules.

The internet is an open blackmarket for everything. It has changed our world and I would argue for the better, but it is the wild wild web and probably needs some checks.

I'm all for a company to come up with some way to protect content, but while everyone debated and argued music sharing, and by the time iTunes got going, an entire industry collapsed. We aren't dealing with just supply and demand here. Music consumption is at an all time high, but revenues have been realizing double digit declines since 2000 year over year. Give companies a way, an incentive, to develop a product that is profitable and they will make it. But as long as we have people in countries that are breaking laws and that we can't have recourse against, no one is going to pony up the money to develop it. Plug the leak so you can fix the wood floors. A company has an impossible hill to climb in this situation. We are dealing with countries that could give a **** about our industries. Hell most don't even have running water. These are sovereign nations, shy of invading them, we can't force them to respect our copywrite laws. I understand the slippery slope, but as long as the boarders are open, people are going to cross them. No different than illegal aliens crossing our borders and taking advantage of our system. We need our government to close the boarders.

Some checks? We need to regulate it somehow but these 3rd World Nations will make it almost impossible. This is actually a place I would love to see the Feds help out businesses, okay, corporations.

This in my opinion has no relevance to the internet, sharing, or piracy. We have some musical members that may have additional input. I feel, with you, the lack of creativity in music and movies but think there are many other issues affecting them.

Recorded music is only about hundreded years old and motion pictures are not even that old, so they have not been around that long. The very internet we have been discussing, TV, movies, and gaming are some of the societal factors that occupy the space that imagination used to fill in children and young adults. Many of these people then took that imagination and put it to work in Hollywood or in music. It appears the folks in Hollywood and music have very little to say recently and use either celebrity, shock or remakes to sell to the public. They are out of ideas and must compete with all that came before that we now have to entertain us.

When the music you cited was released nothing like it had ever been produced. Much of the guitar amplification had recently been discovered and artists were just learning how to use it. It then spawned more ideas that that many still love. Is there anything undiscovered in the guitar? Any new cords?

The music and Hollywood as businesses are not investing in talent only quick profits. They are not looking for the next Eagles, the build time is to long. They want a quick American Idol winner with all the attendant publicity and sales out the gate, then throw them away for next seasons winner. They do not even want to find and evaluate the talent, just let the bored public pick what they will buy off a TV show and cash the checks.

Sorry for the rant I LOVE great music written and performed by someone with something to say. MM

MonacoMike, think about how much it costs a record label to bring an "Eagles" to market. Why would you even do it? Why play? Record companies can't afford to FIND an "Eagles". Record companies used to record and promote 100s of bands to find one Eagles, but when everything is pirated the next day... Pirating has KILLED the music industry and threatens to kill Hollywood.

Humph, I was being PC when I said "checks", of course I feel the gov should help protect intellectual property. It's no different than someone breaking into your house.

They used to do it to build back catalog so when the "find" became more popular they could sell several albums to the public.

For the record I am not supporting piracy. They have no new ideas to sell right now coupled with the fact they can profit from reality and crude junk. MM

Now you're smoking crack. They didn't make records to sell back catalog, they made records to sell records. It wasn't until they made great records that they were able to sell old records. I don't care how much you like the beatles, their first record was ****. No one in the US even knew who they were until they hit big, only then did they sell their old crap and even then it was crap sales. That's the equivalent of hitting the lottery. If you knew that if you hit the lottery and 99% of your money would be taken, would you play?

C'mon. What about the autotune? The single greatest invention developed by the recording industry...EVER. Think of how much more "synthetic" music we'll be getting shoved down our throats by execs pushing no-talent acts that have the right "look." Ah,the future is so bright, I gotta wear shades.

Capitalism will find a way no matter what. Artists now have to tour to make money. The Beatles didn't tour for the last 3+ years of their existence. UNHEARD of in this day and age. Mike, not sure if you've got numbers on the touring side of the industry, but there are MONSTER acts out there, selling a LOT of tickets - in all genres. I'm not a country music fan, but I'm certain that fans of Brad Paisley and some of those other guys wearing 10 gallon hats, singing songs fraught with pedal steel will tell you that there's a lot of money flowing into the pockets of the artists. Record companies...probably not so much, but that may be an industry that has seen its day, sort of like Beta and VHS.

I agree with you, except for the crack part; I lost my pipe.

That was what I was trying to say. Once a band got popular we used to go out and buy all their old albums. MM

What is wrong with "synthetic"?:) The touring leaders are an interesting mix.

The vote has been suspended...

The anti-SOPA Day of Protest ripples continue to spread. On Friday morning, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) put the brakes on a PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) cloture vote. The vote was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 24.“In light of recent events, I have decided to postpone Tuesday’s vote on the PROTECT IP Act,” said Reid in a statement Friday morning.
