OK that is a lot of acronyms.

Since all new Marine radio’s (VHF) have DSC and to work are required to be connected to a GPS and be registered anyways, why don’t they build Automatic Identification System (AIS) into all VHF radio’s so regular pleasure craft have the same safety benefits of commercial craft using AIS?

If mass products and available in a ubiquitous manor I just cant see how this would add much to the cost of the radio if the AIS was built into the radio, just like you can get a basic DSC VHF for uner $100.

I would expect AIS to become more popular in upcoming model years. My Northstar NS100 has DSC and AIS. Give it another 1-3 years.

In the most country's in Europe we must have the ATIS (Automatic Transmitter Identification System) on our VHF system.

That law was already from the year 2000.

I have a Raymarine 230E and the E (Europe) is only because there is ATIS programmed in the unit.

I know for sure that in the most VHF in the USA the identification system option is build in, but only not activated in the software!
