which states dont collect tax?

Where do you live and where do you do your boating?

Florida and Rhode Island.... i believe what others?

As has been mentioned, "What kind of tax?" Just as soon as I receive some paperwork back I know I am going to have to pay .06% sales tax on the boat I just purchased (see signature) :smt089

There is no state income tax, and Texas also has no state income tax

No sales tax in New Hampshire. They also do not require a title when registering a boat.

Michigan requires proof of sales tax (6%) payment when you buy your first state registration. Without proof, no sticker.

delaware does NOT have a state sales tax. that's where i'll be in about 18 years (God willing).

Woody:

That chart needs an adjustment for NJ.....we pay tax on 'prepared' food.....In other words...you buy a hot dog with mustard and kraut from the local 'dirty water dog' guy on the street and you pay tax.....you buy a package of dogs at the Shop-Rite and you don't pay tax on them.

Sales tax collected at time of sale is one thing, but depending on where you live and where you keep the boat you may not avoid paying. If you buy a boat in RI and keep it there you will be OK, but move it to CT, NY, NJ or MA and you will have to pay.

Most states will still want to collect at least a use tax as soon as you register the boat.

Florida does collect sales taxes on boats unless you remove the boat from Florida waters within a specified time limit. Once you leave Florida you are at the mercy of your local taxing authority. Most states have recripical tax agreements and when you apply for registration in your home state, you bill of sale will show no tax collected in Florida and thay may try to hit you for your local sales taxes or for the difference between your local tax and what you paid in Florida.

Oregon doesn't have sales tax.

My lovely State of WA collects sales tax on used boats as well. It's awesome.

...gotta love that. Here in MI, you can:
1) buy a boat,
2) pay sales tax,
3) sell it that year,
4) buy another,
5) pay sales tax on that, and
6) the dude who bought your boat pays sales tax AGAIN on the boat you sold to him.

Repeat as many times as necessary in order to vomit profusely.

Well Florida does the same thing, and I am sure there are many other states which also do this robbery. (Now where is that puke icon?) err, I mean throw up icon. Will someone please pass the tax sickness bag?

Same here. Our boat, an '00, I got to pay nearly $4000.00 on it when I bought it. 8.9% + another $300+ for licensing.

Super cool
