CAT 3116 - 350HP
I aploogize if this is a common question, but my search came up with nothing.

For my 3116 engines, the filters physically hanging from them right now are CAT 324-2598. When I look online, like ebay, and search 3116 Oil Filter, all I see is 1R0739.

Anyone know which one is "right" and what the differences are?

Thanks,
John

Call Cat. One might be a newer version in which it is a higher efficiency. My Cat oil filters have changed due to this.

Caterpillar uses a numbering system that guides their parts guys to the right filter (or any other part) for your particular engine and application. It is called an "Arrangement Number" (AR #) and is located on the serial number tag on the valve cover. It is important that you source your parts with this reference because there are at least 4 different filters that will fit your engine, but only 1 is correct for your arrangement (application).

This is yet another reason that aftermarket filters are a bad choice for Cat engines. Aftermarket filters will probably be the shortest and smallest diameter filter that fits 3116's but Cat will use the largest filter can that will fit your arrangement. The other reason is that Cat filters are usually cheaper than aftermarket ones, if you buy them from a Cat dealer whose primary business is earth moving equipment, rather than marine engines. I stay a year ahead on filters and I buy them in Nashville when it is convenient, rather than in Florida.

I called CAT and they took the serial number and confirmed that it's the 324-2598 (at least for my engine/application). $24.42/ea.

That's the same for my 3126's...that is latest P/N. That succeeded P/N 1R0739. I paid the same price in Chattanooga yesterday...SOS samples are $12.30 for engines and trannys, $26 for Level 2 A/F analysis.

When I bought my boat it had NAPA 1798 filters on my Cat 3116. I wonder what, if anything, the difference is.

I have the NAPA 1798 filters on mine as well. The Cat mechanic I talked to when I bought my boat said these NAPA filters work just fine. His opinion was they were half the cost and basically the same filter. I am sure others will debate this, but I have 1000 hrs on my engines with no problems.

Those are what I use Frank and I get the best price of $17.09 each! Heavy equipment CAT account...

I just pulled out the invoice from Thompson Cat in Nashville..........oil filters were $16.84 in June, but I use a different part number that is slightly shorter.
