First leg of our cruise and we will be in Sag...where are the best places to stay? Sag even beats out NAN for prices. Slip is preferred but mooring might be all we can afford.

Thanks....Ed

I would use the town dock. They don't take reservations but pricing is better, about $4 per foot.

Thanks...how difficult is it to get a slip on a Saturday? I am planning to anchor out on Friday at Shelter Island so could get there any time.

It gets booked. Where are you anchoring in shelter? If west neck, i recommend you stay at the marina there, Island boat yard. Same price as sag, they have a restaurant and will take you anywhere on the island with a shuttle. One of my favorite spots.

I was planning on West Neck...for friday night and move over to Sag for Saturday. So how does the docks work at Sag? Call ahead the day before or show up and wait for someone to pull out like BI moorings?

West neck (docks) are booked solid due to a boat club coming in for this weekend. I had called 2 hours ago!

At Sag you need to call them when you are there. They won't hold a slip if you tell them I am 10 minutes away. All the other marinas in sag will run 5-6 bucks

no, but you can drop anchor they have an anchorage if you head underneath the bridge on your starboard side.

Is there much to do there as far as walking around? I am looking at going on a Tuesday for one night before we go to block. I don't remember ever going here other than passing by on a boat and seeing big ships! Can I assume that a Tuesday there would be no issue getting a slip?

Do you have a dink? If you were considering a mooring, you may want to consider just anchoring in the above mentioned anchorage. We stayed there last year. It was great, holding was fantastic, plenty of room, there is a town dinghy dock, and its all free!

Ed,

I didn't mention anchoring after the bridge b/c your friends SF won't make it under the bridge. It's a lot lower than Shinn Canal. I go there at low tide. Sag is awesome. The town is small but congested with mega yachts, fency stores and restaurants.

I must have ended up in the wrong place....town dock with the concrete bulkhead. They take reservations. I pulled in on Friday and pulled into an empty slip to walk the dog after the crossing from NJ. Dockmaster met us there and we made reservations for the following day. They do take reservations but only have two slips for 50'ers. So I have a slip and my friend gets to anchor out. We stayed in the inner harbor past the bridge last night. Only 5 boats here. Beautiful weather....off to explore Sag.
BTW, got pulled over in downtown main street for biking. No bikes down main street.
Nice town...but too much shopping.
