Hi.
I have a 1999 Sundancer 270 and am about to install a Garmin GHP 10 autopilot. I will need to locate the compass unit, and based on the instructions it seems like above the sump pump in the steps leading down to the cabin would be an ideal location. However, I have a hard time seeing how I can run the cables to this location. Alternatively, I could simply install it behind the dash, but not sure if there are interferences here with all the gauges and metal? Where have you installed the compass unit? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

The best location for the compass is lowest point in the boat, near center as possible. Rocking of the boat will cause slight deviations in course.
All the electronics will cause the compass not to read properly, so the best bet would be to look for other cable/hose runs and run the cable that route.

A note from experience. Get it as subchief discussed above, as well as, as far away from any metalic item including aluminmum as possible.
