Guys,

Firstly I like to say, what a great site. I've spent the last few days reading numerous posts and gaining more vital knowledge.

I've recently purchased a 2008 175 sport and need to install a Navman 7100 VHF. Can any one help with a suitable location that doesn't get knocked, and is useable whilst still looking good.

I've added a pic of my dash for info. (if I've done it sucessfully).

Also you may notice that I don't have a depth gauge yet, but have a blank space (black circle) in the middle of the dash, can anyone also suggest a suitable device.

Thanks in advance.

Mikey

Nice looking boat. I would mount it flush mount right beneath the spot for your depth guage. I would buy the Standard Horizon GX1500S(Black) with the remote RAM mic. This way you have a nice clean install, and you can mount the remote mic right under your cup holder. Nothing in the way and it will look professional.

I have the GX1500S and I flush mounted it(except I had to make a bezel to cover the RayMarine 210 installation spot) and I have yet to install the remote mic. I bought the remote mic so I can hear better out of the RAM mic's speaker by holding it up to my ear.

The GX1500 may be slightly taller than you have room for so look for the GX1000. It's shorter

Just to add to the "idea" list...

If you've already got your VHF, you may consider bracket-mounting it in that shelf area by your right leg. The radio may end up mounted vertically, but that won't affect it.

If there is enough room, then Todd's idea is a good one, but real estate on the dash of (and behind) small boats is always very limited.

If you don't have the radio already, I'd consider a "black box" model. Using one of these, you'd mount the VHF box up underneath the dash somewhere and the remote would be the only thing mounted actually on your dash. The remote does everything... turns it on/off, has the display and all the function buttons.

The depthfinder "hole" is a standard size for in-dash depthfinders. Just pick the one you like. They start around $100.

I like Todd's idea, if you can get it to fit in the center of the dash, do it. But it may be tight, and there may be obstacles behind it. That was the problem I faced in my 175, and so I never did put in a fixed VHF. But I had less space than you on my dash. Instead, I purchased a handheld one. I lost out on the range of conversation, but at least there was something there.
Then you have to mount a big antenna on the side...kinda looks funny on a boat of that size.

I have a Humminbird HR-610 for the depth finder. the dealer gave it to me when i bought the boat. It's nothing fancy, just depth readings and alarms. Easy to install, fits in the hole perfectly, gives excellent readings.

Thanks guys, I'll have to check behind the dash to see if there is anything in the way. Knowing my luck there will be.

Also thanks for the comments on the depth gague, I'll do a bit of searching.

Cheers

Why not go with a hand held? When you move to a large boat, it is nice to have the hand held as a back up, and it is cheaper...

Thanks for you comment rcknecht, but I already have a fixed VHF which I would like to install. Better reception, DSC facility and one less thing to 'float' around the boat when we are out.

Just to keep you al lupdated, I'm having a bit of a problem getting a Humminbird. Looks like nobody in the UK stocks them and a few US sites I've tried won't export them. I've found another site which is looking good (overtons.com) Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Cheers

Mike, you could also try the owner of Club Sea Ray. He doesn't promote it much, but he also has a store. It's BOE Marine and you can find the link at the top of this page. You can also try contacting Jim directly, if you need to. He's VERY familiar with boats and may even be able to recommend something else. Just a thought! Good luck!
