I have a 1987 454 Magnum and need a new thermostat.....at least I think that is what I need. The temperature will climb and climb and then when I rev the engine she quickly drops back to the 145 degrees. I am thinking the thermostat is sticken. Where is a good place to get parts online. I am 150 miles from the nearest dealer.

Thanks all

Personally I think you may have a water pump problem instead. When you rev the motor that is just spinning the pump faster and making up for torn impellor or ????, but those are not symptoms of a bad t-stat. Good luck.

Replace the raw water pump inside the stern drive. It's not hard and should take about 2 hours after you get the boat out of the water. Get either the full or half kit. The full kit includes the lower half of the pump housing. If you don't know when the last time the pump was replaced or it was many years ago, get the full kit. It it was within a few years, the half-kit is OK.

You don't need to remove the drive from the gimbal housing, just separate the upper from the lower by removing the nut foward, the two nuts on the sides, two nuts under the anti-ventilation plate (look up) and the screw under the zinc tab.

Try Mindi at Doller Offshore Marine. They have everything, are authorized Merc dealers so you won't get "almost as good" third party parts, they discount, and ship everywhere.

Best regards,
Frank

Since you're on the left coast. Dennis Moore is in L.A. Handles both Merc and Sierra, Osco, and others. He's also a BBC expert.

Moore Performance. On Ebay, it's laboatparts.
