Please excuse me if this is repetitive but I could not find an answer searching the forums. I need to find the HIN on my 1972 SRV190, Mercruiser 888. The State of Ohio requires a 12 digit number for the title transfer and the number on mine is only 10 digits. It's listed as Mfr's Serial No. and is the number that is on the Data plate under the control lever. There is a way around it with the state ODNR by submitting some additional paperwork and receiving andditional tags that will be affixed to the hull but if it already has a 12 digit HIN that would be unneccesary. I thought it would be on the starboard side of the transom but do not see anything. Could not find any information on Sea Ray's site either. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

should be melted into the transom (like a brand on cattle), they can be hard to spot. Hopefully the older boats had the same way of displaying the #. If it is hard to read you can take place paper over the number and do a rubbing with a pencil to see it clearer. Some marine boards will take this as varification of the # if needed.

It should be printed on the current title. What does it have on it now??? Does it match your 10 digit number?

What month was it built in in 72?
All boats manufactured or imported on or after November 1, 1972 must bear a HIN.

Don't have the info on the month, is there somewhere to find that? I will double check the data plate when I get home, if it's there I may have missed it as it is somewhat scratched up. As far as the title, yes, the number matches the serial number on the data plate and that is what is on the watercraft registration as well. Ohio now wants a 12 digit number for the registration. If not they will issue one.

That tag is the only identification that the manufacturer used before November 1972. http://www.boatfax.com/content/view/89/17/
Just take the tag and any documentation that you have showing that the information is the same and you shouldn’t have any issues. If you do, talk to another person or go to another office.

I just went through this with mine. The prior owner claimed it was a 1979 model and when I asked to see the title he told me that he had never received one for it. Although it was originally from Alaska, he purchased it in 1985 and claimed that he had never received one from the guy he purchased it from either. I checked the hull for the HIN and I could not find one.

I stopped by the DMV office to inquire about this scenario and they told me that boats built before 1973 were not required to be titled but, there should be a serial number on it somewhere. Like you, I found the serial number on the tag. I removed the tag and went back to the DMV with other documentation and the registration number off of the bow along with a bill of sale and was able to get a title assigned for it based off of the serial number.

The serial number is the description of what the boat is and than the number in sequence in which it was built. For example my serial number was 72-240 FB I/O 740. The HIN number was assigned as 72240FBIO740. I had no problems and the lady behind the counter was very helpful.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information everyone. Since I now can safely assume there is no hull ID I will just go through the process of having the watercraft office issue the new tags. They were helpful already in the process so it should not be much of a headache.
