Your Boltman

Boltman,
Been plowing snow, watching the Green Bay Packers and redoing my 310 sedan bridge with carpet, wood floors, all new upholstery, and new V berth, and waiting for the ice to melt.

Just sitting here waiting for spring. My new to me searay is sitting in the building and I only got 3 "take her for a spin" trips, all while still owned by the previous owner.

Gotta go, honey do list calling, how many days till spring again????

Hibernating, repairing seats and hatch covers, refinishing teak, dreaming about boating.

I'm also trying to figure out some places we can go via boat, either for the day or overnight. Our range will be limited and space tight with a 22' cuddy. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Is anyone planning any rondesvous' for the Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, St. Clair River area?

Gregg

Gregg,

Here's some suggestions:

Port Huron/Sarnia
Lexington
Put-In-Bay
Cedar Point

Other than chaisng the fish, we like to spend some family time at Strawberry. We have also attended the Aquapalooza the last two years and a couple of firewoorks displays.

Aren't those pretty long via water?

I am familiar with Strawberry, as well as fisher bay. Did some waterskiing there as a youth.

thank you for the suggestions!

Gregg

Yes, they can be and you need to plan for the weather. The St. Clair River is pretty sheltered so it is a great place to check-out ports along the way. Lake Erie can get pretty rough and people will plan a couple days cushion in case the weather turns bad. For a day cruise head up the middle channel, stop at Brownies for lunch, then continue north to Algonac. From there you can return either South Channel along Harsens Island or out the North Channel into Anchor Bay.

Here's a great map for planning trips around the lakehttp://www.marinecruiser.com/chart.html

As far as fishing, each year seems to get better for me. I've had my boat for 5 years now and have learned the fish patterns. I also adjust based on who is onboard. If I have kids onboard than I head to where the Perch are biting. Best places for Perch are: Mile Roads, GPYC, St. Clair Light and Shipping Channel (Firecracker to Buoy 28). For Walleye I usually will target the Mile Roads and North Channel. Bass and Muskie are everywhere lurking in the weedbeds. Grassy Island off the North channel has everything too. I will also do a little ice fishing at Selfridge, Metro and Fairhaven.

thank you for the link. I would like to go up to St. Clair for the weekend. The city marina there looks pretty nice.

I hope to do some ice fishing, too. Let me rephrase that, my son want to ice fish (has been for the past two years).

Went down to Forts Myers and Lauderdale and looked at a few dream boats.

Saw this center console and it went to the top of the contender list.

Capt'n Paul,

My son in 8, and no, we do not have a shanty. He's been bugging to go ice fishing with grandpa and myself. Its just that the ice has been iffy at best the past two years, as you know. We'll have to rough it out on the ice.

JYurgo,

The lake levels were already down significantly within the last several months. Quite a bit of shoreline exposed from 8 mile to GPC. Let's hope that the "Great Delta" freezes over for the season.

Merry Christmas!

Gregg

My son is 11 and we have a two-man shanty. I use it when I plan to be out for a long time or when the wind is blowing. Otherwise I like to fish in the open. There is nothing better than a calm, sunny, 30 degree day on the ice.

Yes, the ice is unsafe at your end of the lake. It's probably better in the canals. Safest ice is at the north end by Fairhaven. I'm amazed at the difference in ice thickness from one end of the lake to the other.

I think it may have something to do with current. Up in the bay, the water, I think, is a bit more stable. While down by the river, there is more movement. But what the heck do I know?

I know what you mean. Just being out there, peace and quiet, with your son, and father. No phone, no nagging!

The Great Lakes Thread is too quiet Guys, I'm sitting here watching Deadliest Catch, just to see some boating going on........... Man can it get any quieter?

Even quieter here. Watching as the Browns look to be ending their season thanks to Indy (and a failure of the Browns to control their own destiny).

I will be a new Sea Ray boater this year. Was there an Aquapoluza (sp?) on the Great Lakes last year? Did anyone attend. Was it worth it.??

Lake Erie Boater,

MM - Catawba Island had an Aquapalooza event last July. It was scheduled to be held in the cove at Kelly's Island, but high winds/waves forced it to the marina on the south side of the island. Compared to other Aquapalooza events that I have read about, this definitely was not the best. Essentially, all you got was a sandwich, drinks and your goody bag. No entertainment except for MM taking people tubing. Hopefully, next years' event will be better. We might make the trip up to Colony Marine at Lake St. Clair. It looked like they put on a good event.

Indy Scores! Go Browns!!:smt038
