We had a new to boating family move their 22' boat in. As we invited him and his family to join us we all got to talking to him about his boat. They dealer dropped it off, gave him a 10 minute review of the boat, then took off leaving the owner with more questions than answers. We asked, nicely, didn't you do a sea trial? He said the dealer wouldn't let him until he took possession. We all kinda just looked at him, until someone said, that's really not how it's done.

He's going to be doing ridealongs with us over the next month as well as working to get to know his boat better.

I'd say the dealer took advantage of an unknowing boater. If this is a used boat, let's keep our collective fingers crossed that he didn't buy a bum boat. If that information is true, that dealer's name and other info should be passed around as one to avoid.

Bad dealer or not, you have really stood up and showed him what one of things that boating is all about. You are taking him under your wing and teaching him. Thats time well spent and will be priceless for him. "Good for you”, is what I say!

I'm with Matt on this one. And I must say that the boating family is the only place I know where the folks are kind enough and willing to show a novice the ropes without making him feel like an idiot. Kudo's to all of you!

Let's keep our fingers crossed for the newbies and hope they catch on quick. Good for you to step up to the plate and offer some support. Not all dealers are close enough to water to facilitate sea trials though. When we bought our 240 from Spokane they stated that they preferred NOT to have to do sea trials because of the distance involved from their shop. They did offer to repair any items found to be defective that weren't mentioned in the sales agreement, eg: fridge that we already knew didn't work. It all worked out well in the end.

It is a very used boat with an old Forced outboard. To be honest here even my dealer would have been appalled at what this dealer was pulling.

As for the dealer being to far from the water, his yard is less that a mile from a ramp.

I've heard members here talk about dealers like this....but I'd never seen one in action! It make me even more grateful for my dealer out of Richmond

Unfortunately, sharks aren't just in the water:) They're everywhere and we have more than our fair share in FL! Good of all you guys to help him out, hope it all works out okay for him.

I guess I didn't make myself clear.....I was suggesting that he spread the dealer's name around his area, not on here.

And good on ya for taking them under your wing. That's what boaters do for each other.

Williamsburg is a small town as is the area this dealer is from.

New boaters, or new to our area boaters don't know and it's almost impossible to warn buyers. Even if we were to use names here, we already own our boats and over 90% of us had great dealers and staff. Plus one bad experience doesn't make a bad dealer or company, you can't please them all!
