What was your First Car?

Mercury had a version called the Comet XL

Are we talking about the same car? Comets were mid-size. The XLs were HUGE size! That was one big a-- car! Had the dual-gate slap shifter, buckets, hide-away headlights and was the heaviest thing ever. Bought it for $500 and it was near perfect.

The C3 was the Denali package before they called it Denali. Dont ask me what C3 means or where it came from, but I know side by side with a Denali package, they are about the same. They didnt make too many C3's so hang on to it, might be worth big bucks some day.

Good words, and, you're right - Denali without the rear wheel steering. Easy to park - at midnight.

For you classic Camaro junkies, I offered a kid at my school $850 for a '68 Camaro that he owned. At the time, I looked about 10 years old. He thought I was kidding and sold it to a girl for $800. She ran it up under the back end of a big truck and totalled it 2 weeks later. I was PISSED.

My dad found the 1970 Ford XL and we paid 1800 for it in 1976. It was very clean.

First car was a 1967 Chevy Malibu SuperSport coupe with a 327/275 engine and a Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission.

I think you mean a Chevy Malibu...not SuperSport. The Malibus could be had with a 327cid/275HP engine. But the Super Sport package of the Malibu only had a 396cid engine with either a 375, 350, or 325HP option.

See my post a few pages back; I still have one ('66 SS that is). :smt001

Yes, absolutely if you'll give those millions of pieces to a good home with a good collection of tools.

Otherwise, no. Sorry. You're a nice guy, but...

Hmm. Yes and no. Well, I don't know about ricewagons, but a new 2011 Mustang 5.0 would smoke a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda in both 0 to 60 and the quarter mile.
Mustang:
0-60: 4.7sec
Quarter mile: 13.0 @ 110.6

Hemi Cuda:
0-60: 5.8
Quarter mile: 14 @ 102

That said, I'd rather have the 'Cuda. But if I was going to drive it everyday (and pay for it!) I'd rather have the Mustang. $43,000 for a fully equipped convertible vs. upwards of $150,000. On the other hand I wish I bought that 1971 440 6-pk convert that was only five grand way back in 1980. Oh well

The new Mustangs are one of the closest cars today I would consider being at pre 70's Muscle Car status. I know there are a lot of exotic cars out today but I'm talking about reliable daily drivers that you could race on Sunday and drive to work on Monday.

That being said you just can't get the WOW feeling like you can driving a early 70's Cuda!

Could have bought a used 6 pack 440 from a dealer in Indy for $3500.00 back in the late 70's as the gas wars raged.:smt089

My buddy put his 440 Road Runner up for sale and finally unloaded it for $1,500.00!! What a shame......:smt089

Hey Ford fans. Had this girl when I got out of high school.
390 4 bbl. automatic. I had her right up until the rear frame rusted out and the diff went side ways. Body was perfect but the frame was gone.

I know in 65/66 they made a Malibu SS and you could even have it with the 6-cyl. That always kinda shocked me.

Hampton - I think there are 1,000s of stories like yours. It's a shame.

Wow, a lot of you guys had some awesome rides back in the day!

I grew up driving my parents boring rides - first car that I drove was an automatic 69 VW Squareback. That was followed by a 73 Dodge Dart with the slant 6 and a 76 Dodge Colt.

After bringing the Dart to college, I finally bought my first new car, which I thought at the time was a great compromise of "performance" and gas mileage. It was an 81 Dodge Colt RS with the twin stick transmission. The transmission was a 4 speed with a separate lever for power and economy which effectively gave you 8 forward gears and actually 2 reverse gears. I used to regularly prove that there were 2 reverse gears to the disbelievers in large parking lots. I usually drove it using the "power" setting and shifted into "economy" once I was on the highway.

Here's a picture of one that looks just like mine did, right down to the standard "RS" color package.

Yeah, me too. That's why I bought a 72 Dodge Challenger with the small block ("A") 340 4-BBL instead of a 70 Cuda with the big block ("RB") 440 6 pack.

A '59 Chevy with hugr fins. That was when cars were cars or pehaps it was my first boat.

Mike, I worked in college to pay my tuition, room and board, and put gas in the Challenger. My economic monetary unit was the "tank of gas." You know, "Do I want to take some girl to this dinner / dance thing who'll never talk to me again, or do I want to buy 5 tanks of gas?
