What was your first boat and how did you pay for it?

My first real boat is the one I just bought this past fall (34 Dancer). I wanted to buy an older boat that I felt was in good condition and pay cash. Learn a lot from it and what I liked and don't like before possibly someday making a bigger investment on something I really want.

I was able to get a great deal on it and have already learned so much just dealing with storage, preventative maintenance, generator or not, driving it, etc. etc.

Being a novice as I am....I am thankful for what I bought before thinking I knew more than I did and invested in a multi-year financed boat that I might have learned quickly wasn't right for me.

My boat may be old...but so far she has been great. Not in any rush to try and look for something different.

I don't give a crap how others spend money, or how they do it.

Every boat I've owned I paid cash for, but hey, if others wish to finance, that's their prerogative.

There's going to be a buyers market coming up shortly. I've already watched four boats sold last summer make their way back to the sales dock recently, and there they sit. I guarantee by summer the sales docks will have excess inventory.
I hope you're right. Trying to find a decent boat in this market sucks. My cheapness doesn't help. :)

Since it's become a post your first boat thread, here it is -- $1500 at a local auction.

I didn’t see this response until just now... stand back a bit look at the screen and decide what really matters .... I am sure if you have any common sense it’s not what I say... or what you say. Pick what you want and make your own decisions.

At the end of the day, the OP asked for advise. Your response was something I would expect from someone just rolling out of high school that had zero concept of the real world. If you were trying to be cute and display that carefree spirit - Great! I just wish you would have said, "Just kidding" an bit earlier in the thread.
If you were serious, then the comment needed to be pointed out for what it was - which was silly at best.

Hey... I was having fun. I hate referees :)

We can certainly continue if you like.
It's up to you. Totally up to you.

Like I said I hate referees.... who do you think you are to point anything out? Do you actually think people make life decisions from a forum based on your advice?...you should be smarter then that

Original Post:
Do you think it’s better to pay $20K cash and get a used 10 year old 19-21 footer or is it better to get a 10 year old 30-34 footer cruiser and putting 20K down, but having a note of about $100K with a payment of at least $650 a month, depending on interest rate? Then there are slip fees and general maintenance to worry about. Would appreciate any feedback.

Kinda looks like he came here for advice no?
Not sure what you might have misunderstood in his post. Maybe reading isn't your strong suit.

who do you think you are to point anything out?
I'm the person thats making you look like a clown (although you are doing most of the work). But dont be mad at me, like I said, you keep handing me the ammo.

I extended the olive branch but you just keep coming back to get slapped.
You should be smarter than that.

Once again...

You sure are infatuated with this... What ever this is. You need to step back a bit to see who the real clown is. You started this circus keep it going if you like

Says the guy who always seems to want to get the last word in.

If you don't say anything else dumb we're done - deal?
Bud...this infatuation you have for me is not healthy... do us all a favor and get over it. It’s time to move on

Whoa! there's a zingger - Maybe I was not that far off with the high school level intellect estimate?

If you don't say anything else dumb we're done - deal?
I guess you can't help yourself.

... It’s time to move on

I've said that about three times now:

We can certainly continue if you like.

But for what ever reason, you don't see to have the comprehension skills required

(If I thought it would help, I'd type this really slow so that it might help you to understand)

(You need to seek someone out nearby that can help you comprehend what this means. Maybe someone on the board can translate for you)

Oh for crying out loud...seriously? What is wrong with you?.. You started this crap.. you threw the first punch with your holier then thou attitude and you say I have the problem? Get help you are truly sick

You made a really dumb statement and I called you out on it.
I've given you the opportunity to drop this at least 5 times but you keep doubling down on stupid.

Here is number 6. (like I said, find someone to translate it for you)

Again...you deem yourself superior... must be great to be you. You even dictate when it’s time to drop it...again must be great to be you.
You are an idiot if you didn’t understand my statement but that has become perfectly clear.

Your choice bozo....keep it going

Just buy what you want... you will never buy your second boat first...if you think you did your 3rd boat will be your second. We bought a new boat before a house and kids and had a boat in our life ever since. You will always make more money as you grow older so don’t worry about it...just enjoy life

I'll punch out with a final critique of your stellar post.

Ok, so the analogy behind buying your second boat first is lost on you (shocked face). Kinda amazing considering how long you've been on this board.

Just love this. Power dumb.

Peace out - and remember to find someone to help you put the plug in when you launch!

You are such a class act... please don’t hesitate to share your superiority in the future... like this thread you add so much value it’s amazing

Whoa. Off the forum for several weeks and just look at what I miss!

First new boat was a 1979 26’ SR Express Cruiser. Bought it for $21,000 in February at the West Michigan boat show. Combination of cash and a small unsecured signature loan financed it. Sort of like a car loan without the lien. All of our new boats have been express cruisers. We like the layout.
