What was your first boat and how did you pay for it?

Well its not that simple...were you run over by a forklift at work?....or were you flying around on your private jet ?.. if you were mangled by a forklift you should have paid cash for the boat... If jet setting always finance... reality 101... guilt never in the equation

It's even simpler than that if you keep this sage advice in mind:

"You will always make more money as you grow older..."

And when you are ready to make that jump in to the boat of your dreams, go here:

They have a really wide selection courtesy of some people so busy livin' the dream, well, I guess they just forgot to make the payments.

First boat was a 1991, Silverton 37C. We really enjoyed that boat and allowed for my wife and I to understand what we wanted long term for a boat. Had the Silverton for 4 seasons then found the 480DB.

Have a look at post 97

Engineer, low six figure salary without a degree.
Doing well thanks.

Maybe you shouldn't say stupid things that force you in to ad-hominem attacks because you cant defend what you said.
You made a really dumb generalization. Just own it.
Not sure who messed with your corn flakes this morning ...but being a miserable SOB is no way to go thru life... change your cereal and keep an eye on it next time

It was a 16’ Larson. Older boat with a newer 50 horse outboard, trailer. Great shape. $1000.00 cash. I was 23ish, just married, apprentice mechanic / equipment operator, making $5/hour.
I think minimum wage then was $2.50.
Things are different now. Just go with your gut..good luck.

How am I miserable? And please be very specific with your response.
Don't get depressed when someone slaps your own words. Remember you gave me the ammo.

And for what it's worth, the only thing that crapped in my Wheaties this am, was a comment made in this thread that in context, was just power stupid.
It was a hanging curveball - couldn't keep that bat on my shoulder when I saw it coming.

Come on boys. Both of you have made very good points, and your feedback is very much appreciated. Y'all just have a different perspective on things, and that's fine. Let's not get derailed over petty nonsense.

Thanks Al - might be time for a deep breath.
Not a thing against financing - just not my gig.
A few have made some great comments that I can certainly buy into in favor of financing.
My only advice if you go that way, make sure that the first financial hiccup that you might hit can be absorbed without having to sell things (boat), or dig in to your retirement nest egg.

Best of luck, how ever you go - just get a boat that suits your needs for the foreseeable future.

This may top most crazy thread I seen. 19 ft 50 ft cash finance, mommy bought it, who cares, dam. Get what suits you. JFC. Just don’t touch my lil zodiac and Chinese motor.

I didn’t see this response until just now... stand back a bit look at the screen and decide what really matters .... I am sure if you have any common sense it’s not what I say... or what you say. Pick what you want and make your own decisions.

My first boat was a 28 foot 1983 Sundancer and I paid $25,000 cash for it in 1993. I was 32 years old and doing pretty well but still could not imagine having a $500/mo. nut to crack on top of the monthly slip fees, taxes, fuel, beer, repairs and on and on. Fast forward six boats, all cash transactions to the 2006 Searay 44DB @ $350,000 at the age of 55 and I didn't think twice about financing the boat. I knew It would be a 5 year interim boat that would hold its value so we had a $1300 per month mortgage. I budget about $30,000 a year for boating these days which when I was 32 would have seemed crazy. Its all perspective and what works for you. I just always counsel that make damn sure the boat will be a blessing to the family and in no way will be a financial curse. Just my 2 cents
Carpe Diem

Ah ha, I get it now. Don't buy at boat at all, just borrow your buddy's boat.:) But what if I'm running his boat on autopilot while I'm down in the cabin with a stripper who's working her way thru college and get run over by a freighter. He'd be underwater for sure then, dummy had no business buying a boat anyway.o_O
