Got a 150' 5/8" line. I cut 4 12' lengths out of it to use on my new fenders. What to do with the other 100'? I need spring lines, which is what I wanted to do with it. Should I keep it at 100' or cut 2 50' lines? Also, I'm currently using 2 1/2" lines for an anchor bridle. Should I cut the 100' down to 1 50' and 2 25' to use with the mantus hook?

Thanks!

I just made my own bridle out of 1/2" nylon. I pick up my mantus hook at West Marine today. I patterned my bridle after the dimensions on the Mantus site. I believe I used 25' legs, and then about 5' or so from the "Y" to the thimble. I plaited my own eye splices, "Y", and stainless steel thimble. I made all my loops prior to cutting to length. To make it easy to work with, it is better to have the working end too long as opposed to too short! Also, I must have put 12+ weaves in the "Y", which takes extra length.

If you go the spring line route, I would probably just make two. By the time you eye splice one end and then end splice the other, you will probably be closer to 40' of total length than the 50. And I (personally) like the idea of a 40' spring line better than a 30' spring line.

I never buy a line that is less than 25 feet because shorter seems in my situation to be too short to use. If you cut it into thirds, you would end up with three lines around 30 feet each by the time you added spliced eyes or bowlands to the ends. That should be enough to use for ties including springs at many marinas.

I carry two that were former anchor lines. Use them when dropping main anchor then backing up to a beach or dock for stern ties in combination with a beach slide anchor/spike.

If you ever drop the anchor and take a stern line to shore to keep from swinging on the hook, you might want to keep that 100 in one piece.

Like a boat, IMO, a longer line is better. Get a big tub and fabric softener to make the line or lines more pliable.
