What spark plugs do you use?

Every 3 years? I'm disappointed Ron. I pegged you as an every year replacement guy! Thats why I added the caveat for preventive maintenance artists such as yourself.

Touche' Mark - HOWEVER, that would never happen to me b/c I replace them every 3 seasons. AND I put Never-seeze on the threads. But for the lazy and neglectful, you are correct!

My 99 cent Autolites from Wallyworld worked flawlessly - now I pay twice as much for my "marine" plugs b/c of that letter "M!"

I use AC MR44T's. They are slightly hotter than the 43T's and my mechanic thinks they do better for the use I give my boat. (lots of slow cruises down river, etc. I tried Champion and they fouled in just few hours. Oh, and I have 1994 Merc 454 Bluewater engines.

I was just thinking about my plugs as well. I have 2001 7.4 Horizons and from the merccruiser site here, http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::mc6385007mr1368ar12395bi3937780
it recommends these:

SPARK PLUG, Platinum Tip (NGK BR6FVX) (454 MAG MPI HORIZON)

Contact your dealer directly if you require assistance. If you would like to purchase a service or owners manual, please go to https://mercnet.mercurymarine.com/litreq/

Is there a cheaper alternative that is an identical part from another manufacturer?

If your boat had OEM platinum tips, do you HAVE to use platinum tips to replace? Isn't the main difference how long they can go without changing? Educate me please. I almost welcome the copper replace interval gets me in the ER nosing around and I would imagine that if you pull plugs every 3 years they may be easier to get out than pulling them every 7+ years.

Going to perform a tuneup for the first time on this boat here in a few weeks. Does anyone use the E3 plugs? Thoughts?

I would stay away from them. Those "to good to be true" products usually are just that. Stick to oem! A marine engine is not like an automotive one.
