Hello guys I'm getting ready to buy a boat , but for now I can only afford to buy a truck or a boat, can't do both now.
With that said I have a really power train healthy and brakes 2007 ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi, what's the biggest both u have pull in pounds with a half ton, I'm in Florida so barely any hills here, We like the 310, but I know it a little bit pass my truck, may be the 290 sundancer, also some people have said that 310 and up are not really trailable, thanks

Its not so much the size of the boat. What needs to be considered when hauling any trailer is weather or not the tow vehicle is capable of controlling and stopping the said trailer. A four cylinder sub compact car could probably actually pull the weight of a 290 or even a 310, but there's no way it could handle the load or safely stop it. I see far to many severely over loaded tow vehicles on the road these days. Not only are these trailer jockeys endangering there own lives but also the unknowing motorist that share the road with them. Just imagine a 1/2 ton pickup pulling a boat that weighs approximately 7,500 lbs, on a trailer that weighs another 1500 or 2000 lbs. The engine works at close to maximum capacity to keep it rolling ay 55 mph when suddenly the trailer blows a tire, now you have almost 10,000 lbs of steel and fiberglass swaying out of control and throwing the underrated tow vehicle around like a rag doll. Whatever you decide to purchase for a boat make sure you have enough tow vehicle to handle the load. Just another reason why boating is not a cheap hobby.

Your truck is way too light to be pulling that size/weight load. To say that a 310 is not trailerable is just not true. I used to have a 330 and towed it all over the place, including across the Cascade Mountain Range. To tow it I rented an F350 Powerstroke. Towed it like a dream and the truck was heavy enough to be able to control the weight of the load.

If you try to tow too much weight sooner or later it surely will come back to bit you on the ass!

Taking Ride on Pontiaco question : anyone would be able to know if My SUV Lexus LX570,2009. rated 8500 towing capacity can tow sundancer 260,2005?

My Ford F-150 is rated to tow 11,300 lbs. and it pulls my 240 sundancer fine. But if I moved up to a 260 sundancer I would also move up to a 3/4 ton truck. I just wouldn’t feel comfortable pulling it with a 1/2 ton truck.

Buy a 310 and put in the water or dry stack. Trailering is a PITA!

How far are you going to be towing?
If it's just a few miles to the launch, it's different than if it's across country.

250ish is about the limits with a 1500. Like said above, if you are towing 5 miles from your house to the ramp a couple times a year then you can probably get away with it as long as their aren't any big hills. We had a 1986 250DA that had a dry weight of 4500 that we towed with a 1500 Ram Hemi easy. Bought a 2006 Crownline 250 that has a dry weight of 6500lbs. The 1500 pulled it fairly easy but I could tell it was heavier. Weighed it and with the tanks empty the boat and trailer were 8750lbs. My 1500 was only rated to tow 8600lbs so I bought a 2500. My 2500 is rated to tow 16,600 IIRC and from what I recall a 310 with trailer is right about there so not sure I would even want to tow that with my 2500 and no way with a 1500. Dock neighbor had a 2015 310 and a 2015 2500 6.0 gasser Chevy and upgraded to a 2017 2500 Duramax because the 6.0 struggled to tow it. I'm not sure a 1500 would even pull a 310 up the ramp

Depends on the rating for your truck. New 1/2 ton rams have capacity from 7500 to 11500 depending on equipment. I pulled my 270 Slx 1100 miles with my 2015 Ram a few years ago. Boat on trailer was in the 8000lb range which was under the rating on the truck. Never felt unsafe, but plenty of places 55 mph was the limit based on hills or wind. But neither the 310 or 290 is viable for 1.5 hrs with your truck.

so you dont think the Lx570 rated for 8500lbs cannot pull a 7900 dry boat? drive slow, careful ..... i have been towing a welcraft martinique 2600 (2001), no problem...barely feel the boat... really curious... i need to make a decision.

7900 dry without trailer? 7900 dry would likely be closer to 8500 now add in a trailer if that isn't in that 7900 and you are about 9500-10000 now. Either way, towing isn't so much about the engine power but more about the stopping ability and the vehicle stability. My wifes Subaru Crosstrek could likely tow our boat across a flat parking lot but I certainly wouldn't want to try to tow it down the road. That would be an accident waiting to happen. I don't know much about the LX570 so I won't speculate on that but seems like you are very close and probably over your limit

Pontiaco... what's the maxt trailering rating for your specific truck, making sure to pay attention to axle ratio? Take that number and multiply it by 80% - that gives you a good number as to your max for normal trailering.

Next, take the boat's dry weight and add... full gas tank, options, full water, full holding tank, batteries, trailer and gear. Compare the two numbers and you have your answer.

Wagner, this thread is really about Pontiaco's situation, but if you're talking about a 2005-2009 260DA... you're way out of your league with the Lexus. That boat, wet, comes in between 11,000 and 12,000 pounds. If you have to stop fast and try to swerve... the boat will toss the truck around like a rag doll.

Can a vehicle rated to pull 8500lbs pull a 7900lb dry weight boat? Absolutely not!

This is actually a bit of a scary statement. I don't mean this in a negative way, but if you truly 'barely feel' the boat back there, maybe trailering isn't your forte. I'm just guessing, but the Martinique probably weighs somewhere in the 9,000lb range, wet. That kind of weight behind the Lexus should be VERY noticeable. Trailering with that kind of mindset is an accident waiting to happen. Again, I don't mean this in a negative or disrespectful way, but trailering that kind of weight (compared to the car's capabilities) needs to be respected... well, trailering anything needs to be respected, but you get the idea.

My only question is, Who figures out what some of these vehicles can tow cause I thing they pull them out of a hat!! If you're going to tow any weight with a vehicle better get 4.10 gears.
